Summer 2021

Email to all summer residents - 8/24/21
Dear Sandburg Residents,

University Housing’s Facilities team will be shutting off the steam to East Tower on Wednesday, August 25 from 6 am to 5 pm. East Tower floors 6-17 will not have hot water during that time; however, floors 1-5 will still have hot water. East Tower residents should plan on showering the night before to ensure they have a hot shower.

Shutting off the steam will allow us to disconnect the steam dryers located on the north end of East Tower’s laundry room to convert them to electric dryers. The new electric dryers will not be installed until September 7-11, so the existing electric dryers on the south end of East Tower’s laundry room will be the only ones that are operational.

Please also keep in mind that North Tower’s laundry room will remain offline until new machines are installed on September 7-11, as well.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

University Housing

Dear Residents,

We wanted to make you aware that there is once again a significant chance of severe storms that may happen this evening, Wednesday, August 11, with little advance warning. There is the potential for significantly high winds, which could affect the power grid, and UWM Safety Alerts are likely to be issued.

Please close all windows, and move away from windows into the suite, hallway, or lounge space if there is a warning issued. Please also know that if we do lose power for a period of time, you should not open any refrigerators to help keep perishable foods from spoiling, and keep in mind that you may be unable to use elevators or charge electronics such as cell phones.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Sandburg Service Desk at (414) 229-6123. You can also reach the UWM Police Department at (414) 229-4627 (non-emergency) or (414) 229-9911 (emergency).

Façade Survey of the Kenilworth Exterior

Wednesday, July 14, 2021 – 12 pm to 2 pm

Dear Kenilworth Residents,

Working on behalf of the State of Wisconsin, Core4 Engineering, a UWM-approved contractor, will complete an exterior building inspection of Kenilworth from the ground level using binoculars. The inspections are scheduled for Wednesday, July 14 from 12:00 pm (noon) to 2:00 pm.

The contractors will have fluorescent vests on so that they can be identified. For total privacy during this drone inspection, anyone with exterior-facing windows may feel free to keep their blinds or curtains closed during this period.

This exterior building inspection is needed so that we can make the necessary façade repairs that are found during the inspection.

Please contact university-housing@uwm.edu with any questions or concerns.

Email to all Kenilworth residents - 6/16/21
Dear Kenilworth Residents,

Thank you for your understanding and patience last evening during the two fire alarms that resulted in evacuation of Kenilworth Square Apartments. The safety of our community is our first priority. While we acknowledge that it can be inconvenient or frustrating to have to evacuate the building, we do appreciate your cooperation to appropriately evacuate in a timely manner.

University Housing staff worked with Milwaukee Fire Department, UWM Police Department, and UWM Facilities staff to investigate the cause of the alarms. Upon investigation, it was discovered that a pull station was activated resulting in the alarms. UWM staff were able to issue an all-clear, and the Milwaukee Fire Department reported no trace of fire in or around the building.

Thank you again for your cooperation and understanding.

Sincerely,
University Housing

UWM updates rules on mask-wearing, social distancing

UWM recently updated its COVID-19 health and safety policy, which affects rules on mask-wearing and social distancing. These rules affect all students, employees, and visitors on campus, including those who are living in University Housing this summer.

Fully vaccinated individuals are no longer required to wear face coverings in UWM facilities or outdoors, according to the university’s interim COVID-19 health and safety rules updated in June 2021. Individuals may choose to continue to wear masks for many reasons; UWM encourages everyone to be respectful of individuals’ personal decisions and medical privacy.

All unvaccinated individuals, including UWM students, employees, and members of the public, must continue to wear face coverings while in UWM facilities. In addition, unvaccinated employees are required to wear face coverings in other enclosed buildings while on UWM business. This policy is in effect moving forward.

In addition, social distancing is no longer required in indoor spaces. However, individuals are encouraged to remain at least 6 feet apart from others when possible in all shared, indoor spaces on campus, such as residence halls, common spaces, classrooms, restrooms, elevators, laboratories, conference rooms, and breakrooms.

University Housing’s guest policies are still in place until further notice: Guests are not allowed into campus housing.

Individuals who have a fever or other symptoms, have been diagnosed with COVID-19 by a health care provider, or have recently been in close contact with someone who has the disease, may not be on campus or in UWM buildings. Students who meet the above criteria who also live in residence halls should contact University Housing to make arrangements for isolation or quarantine. Please call the Sandburg Service Desk at 414-229-6123 or Kenilworth Service Desk at 414-229-0512.

Hello, Summer Residents and Live-In Staff –

UWM currently requires on-campus residents to COVID test on a weekly basis. Summer Contract holders will be required to continue weekly COVID testing until/unless local public health guidelines allow for vaccinated individuals to be exempted. All testing must be done weekly, Monday–Friday between 7 AM and 12 PM (noon). Do not schedule afternoon appointments.

Residents who are initially entering University Housing starting in Summer 2021 will be required to be COVID tested within 3 days from your assigned date of entry/MoveIn date unless you are fully vaccinated. After the initial test, weekly testing of unvaccinated students will continue. This may be updated or modified according to CDC, state, or local health authorities’ guidance.

Summer Testing Process

Schedule your weekly COVID-19 Test by going to doineedacovid19test.com and use your UWM email address. You will select the Union (Student) Location. Summer COVID-19 testing will take place at the UWM Union Wisconsin Room. Only sign up for appointments between 7 AM–12 PM (noon) time slots.

Exemptions

If you would like to be exempt from testing, you must have an approved exemption on file at UWM. Until your exemption is approved, you must still test.

As of April 28, 2021, “UW System students who are fully vaccinated against COVID19 are exempt from routine COVID-19 testing on campus. But remember, you are not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after you received the last recommended dose. To be exempt from testing, you will need to provide proof that you have reached that vaccination marker.”

To get an approved exemption, you must fill out the exemption request. You will need to upload proof of vaccination, which could be a copy of your vaccination card or a copy of your vaccination record from the Wisconsin Immunization Registry. For additional details and direct link, please visit uwm.edu/coronavirus/updates/testingexemption-available-for-fully-vaccinated-students-and-employees.

Getting Vaccinated

If you would like to get vaccinated at the clinic in the UWM Student Union, you can make an appointment at uwm.edu/vaccination or go to walk-in appointments Monday-Friday 9 AM–3 PM. UWM strongly encourages vaccination as the best way to protect your health and help bring an end to the pandemic.

Current Policies

All policies and expectations related to requiring masks in campus buildings and the residence halls, testing being required, no guests, and social distancing are still in effect until further notice. It is important to continue following health and safety protocols while people are getting vaccinated. Panthers Protect Panthers!

Sandburg Towers Water & Heat Updates

The Heat Plant will be shutting down the steam starting on Sunday, May 23. Please note that most of Sandburg will not have hot water, heat, or air conditioning from May 23 – 28. There will be shower suites available in East Tower for residents who want to take a hot shower between May 23 – 28. Please see the Sandburg Service Desk for the key to a shower suite.

Due to the North Tower renovation, University Housing Facilities will also be turning off the domestic water to the entire West Tower (minus the Police Department) and South Tower on Monday, May 24 from 12:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m. Water will be available in both Sandburg Commons and East Tower, however.
