The UWM Dean of Students office is accepting applications for this assistance and distributing the funds. As always, if this does not work meet your needs, please contact your advisor or Interim Dean Nancy Frank, frankn@uwm.edu.

For Students Attending In-Person Classes

First and Always: Panthers Protect Panthers

Three simple things can help keep you and those around you safe this fall:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Watch your distance.
  • Wear a mask.

If you feel any respiratory symptoms or other symptoms of COVID-19, stay home. Let your instructor know why you will miss class, and follow these instructions.

NOTE: here is the weblink for “symptoms of COVID-19”: https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/symptoms.htm

Norris Health Center will provide telehealth and in-person services, including coronavirus testing for students with COVID-19 symptoms. Testing at Norris is free of charge to students. Individuals who have a fever or other symptoms, have been diagnosed with COVID-19 by a health care provider, or have been recently been in close contact with someone who has the disease, should stay away until public health guidance or their medical provider permits returning.

Generally, all students should contact their current healthcare provider for further advice if they have any indication that they may be ill with COVID-19. If a UWM student who is currently on campus has symptoms or has had a positive test result, they should contact the Norris Health Center and their current healthcare provider. Norris Health Center follows all applicable laws and keeps the information confidential unless a student signs a release.

UWM will provide students with COVID-19 testing through the on-campus medical clinic, Norris Health Center. Following current public health guidance, UWM will prioritize students with COVID-19 symptoms. The second priority will be students who do not have symptoms but who have been a close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19. Students who test positive for COVID-19 should not come to campus. DO NOT assume mild symptoms are just a cold. Those living in residence halls will be asked to return to their permanent homes to recover. Limited isolation housing will be available for students who can’t return to or do not have permanent residences.

The Milwaukee Health Department conducts tests for coronavirus, and with a positive test, it begins a contact investigation. Using information gathered during this investigation, local or state health departments notify people it determines are at risk. Local health departments are following state and federal public health guidelines related to contact investigations. Faculty and instructional staff have been asked to refrain from requesting doctor’s or health care provider’s notes when a student misses class due to illness. This will help relieve pressure on overburdened health care workers. Similarly, they’ve been asked to not request notes from students’ parents, as many UWM students live on their own.

Faculty and instructional staff are also asked to be flexible with students whose families have been impacted by COVID-19. During this time, students may be caring for loved ones who are ill or otherwise need their support, or contending with other complications related to the pandemic. Faculty and instructional staff are asked to consider posting this information in their Canvas course announcements.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Students in need of support–whether financial or emotional or both–can contact the Dean of Students in the Student Union, Room 345, at dos@uwm.edu or 414-229-4632. Counseling services are available virtually through telehealth appointment. Please call University Counseling Services at 414-229-4133 or visit the counseling services website for the latest information.

Visiting SARUP

The building is open, but many of the faculty and staff members you may be looking for continue to work from home through the Fall semester. You can find email addresses for faculty and staff, and most adjunct faculty on our Directory page. If you are unsure who to contact or how, email lsg1@uwm.edu or call 414-229-4014.

As always and everywhere, not just in SARUP:

  • Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet between you and other people;
  • Wear a mask–you will receive two re-usable washable masks from UWM;
  • Wash your hands! Often.

Stay safe.

Key Distribution for Studios
Keys will be distributed to faculty. Faculty will distribute keys to students during the first week of the semester.
Online instruction
For courses that are offered online this semester, faculty will provide information on Canvas, by email and on the first day of classes about how students will participate. Some online courses are synchronous, meeting at the normal course meeting time. Others have adopted a hybrid approach, in which class will meet online in a video conference only for part of the class session or for some of the class sessions, while the remainder of the course content and interaction will occur in asynchronous mode (24/7; self-paced but with specific deadlines). Finally, some courses may be offered entirely in a self-paced mode. Your instructors will provide details as much as possible before the first day of classes. Look in the schedule of classes for notes about how specific courses will be taught online.

Woodshop and RP Lab

Due to social distancing and disinfection requirements, it is not feasible to open the Wood Shop this fall.  The RP lab will be open and will provide socially distanced service to students.

You will drop off material outside of room 179 and email the lab your submissions. We will look over your submission and if there are not any questions we will cut or print your project. You can choose to 3d print your objects just through email and the lab can print your parts and you just pay for what you use. Or you can drop off your own spool of PLA plastic (available at Third Coast) and we will print the parts from that. Then once completed the lab will email you an invoice and once purchased, we will have your objects available for pickup outside of Room 179. Please reach out to us if you have questions. The lab hours and tutorial videos will be up on the website before school starts.

Third Coast Design Centre
Third Coast Design Centre

As we plan to safely reopen, we remain conscious of our obligations to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and have implemented changes to ensure the safety of students, staff, professors, and guests.

The biggest change is that a Virtual Ticket will be needed to get into the store. Students will be able to get their ticket on the app as long as they are within two miles of Third Coast. The ticket will show how many people are ahead of them and how long it’s taking us to serve each person. This will allow them to work on projects instead of waiting in line. The Virtual Ticket app is available for download on our website, mythirdcoast.com.

To minimize traffic in our store, kits for Architecture 100, 310, and 810 must be purchased online by August 28th, this will allow us time to prepare for the distribution of the kits. You will receive kit pick-up information closer to the start of the semester.

Additionally, all aisles will be one way, cleaning measures will be increased, and an acrylic shield will be installed at the front counter.

This is new territory for all of us. As we adapt to these new challenges, we ask for everyone’s patience and understanding.

We take pride in being a part of SARUP and encourage people to be kind, be safe, and take care of one another during this time.
And if we can help, let us know.
