Research provides the foundation to make sound design and planning decisions that are informed by more than aesthetic principles. Central to SARUP’s philosophy is the notion that excellence in design and planning education entails excellence in research capability, adding to our knowledge base about the built environment and land use policies. The school is home to a number of distinguished research centers and initiatives that attract students and faculty from around the globe. Students from the undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. programs have opportunities to work alongside SARUP faculty conducting research at the Center for Architecture and Urban Planning Research (CAUPR), Design + Construction Institute, Institute for Ecological Design, Buildings-Landscapes-Cultures, Historic Preservation Institute (HPI), and Community Design Solutions (CDS). SARUP research is supported by a specialized collection of books, journals and award-wining planning documents housed in the Resource Center.
