Carolyn Esswein, director of UW-Milwaukee’s Community Design Solutions program, received the WCREW Spire Award from Wisconsin Commercial Real Estate Women.

In a statement from the organization, Carolyn Esswein was honored for her 20 years of “excellence, integrity, innovation and being a champion of diversity.”

Esswein has been a practicing urban designer and planner since 1994, working with more than 30 communities in the Midwest. Her work promotes investment and provides guidance for public and private development initiatives. Implemented projects include neighborhood planning, urban design, development guidelines and codes, public participation, economic development, online zoning and sustainable urbanism.

UWM and the School of Architecture & Urban Planning founded Community Design Solutions in 2000 as a provider of preliminary design and planning services to underserved Wisconsin communities, civic groups and non-profit organizations and as a promoter of research and instruction concerning public interest planning and architecture. All of the staff members are UWM students.
