Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) uses bus-only lanes, efficient boarding systems, effective station spacing, traffic signal preemption, and other characteristics to provide fast public transportation service. Students in the UWM BRT Workshop developed conceptual designs for potential transit stations along Milwaukee’s East-West Corridor. The three example BRT station locations in this video are on Wisconsin Avenue between 4th and 5th Street (Wisconsin Center station), between 16th and 17th Street (Marquette station), and at 27th Street (27th Street station). The video illustrates how exclusive bus lanes can be positioned along the Wisconsin Avenue median or along the curb to serve the Marquette and 27th Street stations. Median bus lanes are preferred because they have fewer conflicts with on-street parking, delivery vehicles, and turning vehicles, which facilitates rapid service.
