“Architectural Artifacts – strategies for finding & reusing” presentation by Mike Jackson, FAIA, and H. Russell Zimmerman

Workshop Summary:

This hands-on architecture artifacts workshop and panel discussion will be a one-day in-person event focused on the educational strategies for finding and reusing historic building artifacts. Items will be from the architecture, engineering and construction industry, especially in the spirit of preserving our historic treasures. The workshop will be a classroom environment, where attendees will learn the history, background, and reuse ideas of building artifacts with two central themes – saving heritage along with addressing environmental concerns about the damaging effects of destruction and demolition. The workshop space will include dozens of objects for a hands-on experience along with the high-tech instruments to laser scan the items and reproduce them. The laser scans will also be the fundamental, online electronic archive library for access by people and companies from around the world. The workshop will teach attendees about the evolution of material reuse methodology. Discussion will cover some traditional techniques such as large format photography, to more advanced methods like laser scanning and photogrammetry. Low-cost supplemental documentation tools like 360-degree cameras and virtual tours will also be discussed. The presentations will cover background information, best practices, use applications, and case studies of successful projects. The workshop will allow attendees to get a firsthand understanding of documentation tools as well as methods of reuse. Material will include important objects from various historic sites in Milwaukee and Chicago. Multiple stations of the different documentation methods will be setup, and each attendee will get to participate in each station where there will be hands-on demonstrations of each documentation method discussed. This presentation will bring together the complementary artifact collection of the NBAC and the archives of the BTHL as research sources for the historic built environment.
