Three studios propose adaptive reuse and new construction for the St Paul Av US Post Office District, a subject of interest to the City of Milwaukee. The mid-century concrete brutalist modern Post Office spanning three blocks of St Paul Av is considered for adaptive reuse as a cultural center with Theatre, Library, Museum, and Cineme. Five unbuilt sites fronting the Post Office on St Paul form a center for renewing this district with 20-story hybrid program buildings designed with timber mass structure and intelligent skins to provide a sustainable urban density for an emerging high tech hub in the city.

These student designs are part of an innovative pedagogic strategy at SARUP to address marco-design issues at a micro-scale in a 43-student collaboration for three independent studios titled: “SUPRAstudio: the Heliomorphism Investigation.” The three advanced-level studios are the Historic Preservation Studio, IP_BIM Studio, and Intelligent Skins Studio. Professional reviewers will respond to five different 3-team collaborative digital presentations with small physical models from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM in the AIA Chicago offices. Alumni and interested architects are invited to participate in the review and discussion about Milwaukee’s downtown development. Studio works directed by Professors M. Jarosz & G. Snyder, M. Gamberg, M. Mabee, W. Krueger.
