Consultations

CETL staff provide a number of services for faculty, instructors, and departments at UWM.

Individual Consultations

We will meet with UWM faculty and instructors  upon request for a private consultation about teaching and/or individual course design. All meetings and materials are confidential, formative, and developmental, not part of university faculty review processes. In an individual consultation, CETL staff members offer collegial support informed by research on learning and teaching. We will not tell you how to teach, but we will ask questions and explore possibilities so that you can meet your own teaching and learning goals.

Consultations typically focus on areas such as:

  • assessing and enhancing a current course
  • creating a new course or revising an existing course, assignment, or syllabus
  • understanding and measuring what students are learning • exploring new pedagogical techniques or different approaches to class or course design
  • interpreting comments and numerical results from Student Evaluation of Teaching forms.

Canvas, Desire2Learn, and Learning Technologies: In addition, CETL provides a wide range of support for UWM faculty and instructors who use Canvas or Desire2Learn (D2L), the campus-wide course management systems, and supported learning technologies.  CETL offers training workshops for gaining an introductory knowledge of Canvas and supported technologies and maintains extensive web-based resources that provides self-guided help.

Departmental Consultations

Did you know that one of the indicators for successful change and improvement is creating a community of support for change? CETL is particularly pleased when invited into a department, meeting, School, or College to help a cohort achieve its goals. Oftentimes, change is more sustainable when colleagues share and support one another and identify common needs among their students and within their programs. In addition, CETL staff are often invited to facilitate or present at UWM department, School, and College meetings, retreats, or kick-offs.

The workshops listed below (and topics by request) are relevant for all modes of teaching and learning, including face-to-face, blended, and online and can be adapted to meet your needs.
