Colloquium: Ms. Caroline Merighi

February 7, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Context Matters: How Beliefs Impact Reasoning About Calculus and Proofs

Ms. Caroline Merighi
Tufts University
PhD Student

“We will look at calculus students’ beliefs about mathematics and how those beliefs impact the ways they reason about graphs of functions. We will also examine middle and high school mathematics teachers’ beliefs about proofs and how teachers evaluate student proofs. The evidence suggests that not only students’ and teachers’ beliefs impact their reasoning, but also that their beliefs are dynamic and depend on the specifics of the context they are working in.”

Light refreshments will be served @ 1:30 pm in EMS E424A.
