2015 Anthropology Student Union Student Colloquium: Report

The 2015 Anthropology Student Union Student Colloquium was held in Sabin Hall on Saturday, March 14. This year’s theme, “Transformations in Time: Change as a Constant” was used to promote the work of student anthropologists who contribute to the discussion of change, both in our world and in the study of anthropology.

We had 17 students present this year on various topics among the four subfields of anthropology. Fourteen of the presentations were given by students of the UWM Anthropology Department, 1 was from the UWM Sustainable Peace Program, 1 was from Illinois State University and 1 was from Indiana State University. In addition, Dr. Pat Richards, Dr. Jason Sherman, and Dr. Thomas Malaby all presented as discussants. This year, we also welcomed Dr. Judy Ledgerwood of Northern Illinois University to present as our keynote speaker.

In total, there were 71 attendees from several departments at UWM and 5 universities including UWM, NIU, University of Illinois, Illinois State University, and Indiana State University. The winners of the Anthropology Department Paper Competition were also announced at the Colloquium. In first place was Katherine Sterner-Miller (PhD Candidate, UWM), in second was Joshua Driscoll (PhD Candidate, UWM), and in third was Melissa Frederick (Masters Candidate, Illinois State University).
