What are Workshops?

Each Semester the Studio Arts & Craft Centre offers short-term workshops teaching those who sign up different techniques and skills. Attendees pay a small fee to receive instruction and supplies and end up leaving with a piece or pieces of their own, along with new skills to keep making!

Book Arts

Book Arts Workshop 

Date:Wednesdays, April 17 – May 1 
Time: 6 – 8pm 
Explore the pleasures of creating a hand-bound book and join us for an exciting evening of book art making with local professional artist Madison Dawne. Express yourself creatively on paper and learn how to bind it all together. If you’ve ever been curious about how to make a book or just want to practice your bookmaking with interesting people, our book arts workshop is the place to be! Artists of all levels are welcome. The workshop takes places in coordination with the Union Art Gallery’s exhibition, Turning Pages: Social Justice in Book Art open to the public from April 12- May 9th. Reception on April 12 from 5-8pm.

Print

Linoleum Cutting Workshop
Date: Tuesdays, February 26 – March 12
Time: 5pm-6:30pm
Experience the process of cutting your own linoleum block and printing it yourself to make multiples. Working with linoleum is a great gateway into many different printmaking methods.

Pronto Plate Lithography Workshop
Date: Thursdays, February 14 – 21
Time: 5pm-6:30pm
We will be touching on the surface of the printmaking process called lithography. Pronto Plate lithography is a very simplified version of this extensive process. Great for beginner printmakers.

Screen Printing: Poster Edition!
Date: Tuesdays, April 2 – 23
Time: 5pm-7pm
Make screen printed wall art out of your own drawings/design! Learn how to take your image and put it onto a screen, then use it to print multiple art pieces. You can also bring your own t-shirt to wear your design! Workshop fee includes your own screen, paper, and ink that you get to keep.

Intro to Wheel Throwing 
Session 1
Dates: Wednesdays, February 13 – March 13
Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm
Learn how to create cylinders, bowls and mugs in addition to glazing techniques. Leave with your own unique, usable pieces.

Advanced Wheel Throwing

If you’ve taken Intro to Wheel Throwing and you’re looking for more of a challenge, this is it! Learn how to throw larger pieces and more design techniques for your own pieces.

Coil Planters

Time: 5-7p
Learn how to build a full-size ceramic planter with coil construction.

Cyanotype

Date: Thursday, May 2 
Time: 5pm-7pm
Coat paper with a light-sensitive chemical, then use the sun and an object stencil to create stunning blue and white images.

Light in Lightroom 
Date: Mondays, April 1 – 8
Time: 6pm-8pm
Learn the basics of Adobe Lightroom in order to improve the lighting in your photographs and artificially add lighting in post-production.

Traditional Black and White Photography 
Date: Monday, April 22
Time: 6pm-8pm
Learn the basics of darkroom photography by enlarging 35mm to black and white prints. Students and/or community members will learn how to use enlargers and create an 8×10 print from their 35mm negative.

Drawing on Glass 
Date: Tuesday, April 30
Time: 4pm-8pm
Learn how to fire drawings into glass enamel, in a permanent, fun and archival method that will last for thousands of years!

Jewelry in Unexpected Materials 
Date: Tuesday, April 16
Time: 6pm-8pm
Learn how to get creative with unexpected materials and create fun and exciting jewelry you can keep or gift! We will show you how to work with some unconventional items to create interesting necklaces, earrings and more.

Fibers

Indigo Natural Dye (Shibori)

Date: Mondays, March 4 – 11
Time: 5:30pm-8pm
Participants will learn the basics of indigo dyeing on fabric using Japanese folding & binding techniques to create a one-of-a-kind piece that participants can take home. Together we’ll discuss the cultural & historical importance of indigo, prepare the vat and materials and dye our pieces.

2D Work

Illustration with Markers

Date: Thursdays, April 4 – 25
Time: 6pm-8pm
Learn the basics of developing a marker-based illustration. Starting with a still life drawing to build proficiency, we will move toward developing characters, scenes and stylistic representation.

Hanji Box Making (Korean Paper)

Date: Monday, April 15
Time: 5pm-8pm
You will be constructing your very own personal keepsake box decorated with traditional Korean paper.

Experimental Approaches to Water-based Paint Media 
Date: Friday, April 19
Time: 11:00am-4:30pm
A one-day, experimental process-based workshop focusing on water-based paint media on paper. Throughout this workshop, you will create oneofakind artwork through self-expression and collaboration with your peers.
