Each semester the Studio Arts & Craft Centre offers short-term workshops to teach different skills and techniques. Attendees pay a fee to receive instruction and supplies and end up leaving with a piece(s) of their own, along with new skills to keep making on their own!
We are moving towards a new discount process for University staff and alumni! All staff and alumni will be given a 15% discount on workshops. Please email the Craft Centre at craftctr@uwm.edu or call us during open hours at 414-229-5535 for the discount code that will be entered and applied at checkout on University Tickets when purchasing your seats in any workshop. Discount codes will change each semester.
**The Studio Arts & Craft Centre reserves the right to cancel workshops due to low enrollment. In that case, attendees will be notified one day prior to the start date by 10am and will receive a full refund.**

Intro to Wheel Throwing Session 3-FULL

Mondays, March 25-April 22, 6:00 – 8:00PM
Take a spin on the potter’s wheel! In this intro wheel throwing class, participants will learn the basics of making pottery with the potter’s wheel. Three main forms will be covered on the wheel: the cup, bowl, and plate. Glazing will also be explored, and participants can expect to walk away with several fully finished pottery pieces. Workshop fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay with additional clay available for purchase; all glazes are included.

Intro to Photography: Capturing on Black and White Film

Wednesdays, April 3-24, 5:30-7:30pm
Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of darkroom photography and how to shoot, and print 35mm film. Using a 35mm film camera, this workshop will give a look at the process of analog photography from start to finish. Learn how to make paper! We will process, pulp, and pull sheets of paper made from recycled scraps – what a great way to reuse paper! This is something you can learn in the Craft Centre and then do at home for future paper crafts.

Woodcut Printmaking

A walk-through on the art of making prints from a woodcut. Beginning with carving the wood and ending with printing the inked block, this is an excellent process for those wanting to be introduced to printmaking.

Enameled Earrings Session 2

This workshop will explore some techniques of beginning metalsmithing that will allow you to make future metals projects. Students will learn the basics of enameling on copper sheet and learn multiple ways to apply enamel to the surface. Participants will have a finished pair of earrings at the end of the workshop as well as the skills to continue creating custom jewelry.

Cyanotype

In this workshop, participants will learn an alternative photography process dating back to the 1840s, creating images with a light sensitive solution that turns into a vibrant blue color when exposed to light. Participants will use photographic transparencies and objects as stencils pressed directly onto the coated paper surface, then expose it to light to create their imagery.

Screen Printing on Paper: Separations, Exposure, and Production

In this workshop you will learn how to translate imagery into a handmade screen print. Participants will be led through the process of developing their image, producing screens, and the process of printing. The printing process is done color by color. We will touch on some more advanced ink techniques for future use. Printing will be done on paper to create posters or other wall art. Workshop fee includes use of a screen plus paper, and ink that you get to keep!
