Workshops 

Each semester the Studio Arts & Craft Centre offers short-term workshops in each of our five areas to teach different skills and techniques. Attendees pay a fee to receive instruction and supplies and end up leaving with a piece(s) of their own, along with new skills to keep making on their own! 

Register for Workshops:  

There are three (3) ways to register for workshops: (1) Register online at www.uwm.edu/studentinvolvement/workshop-registration, (2) Call 414-229-5535 or (3) Stop by the Craft Centre to register in person.  

*Online registration is a two-step process. Your spot is reserved online, but payment is done over the phone or in person. * 

The Studio Arts & Craft Centre reserves the right to cancel workshops due to low enrollment. In that case, attendees will be notified one day prior to the start date by 10am and will receive a full refund.  

 

Printmaking Workshops

Intaglio Etching 

Date: Tuesdays, October 1- 22
Time: 6pm-8pm
Learn how to etch a copper plate with acid, then use printmaking ink to print your etched images onto paper. This is a great workshop for those who love to draw. We will be using advanced techniques to create stunning pieces.
Cost: Students – $60            Faculty/Alumni – $70           Community Members – $80

Break the Block – A Collaborative Linocut Printmaking Intensive 

Date: Thursdays, October 17- 31
Time: 5pm-8pm
Explore the process of linoleum block relief printmaking while collaborating with fellow students and your instructor. Participants will work through the process of planning a collaborative linoleum block, transferring images, carving techniques, and finally how to pull an edition of prints.
Cost: Students – $45            Faculty/Alumni – $60          Community Members – $75

Screen Printing: Poster Edition!  

Date: Tuesdays, November 5 – 26
Time: 6pm-8pm
Turn your drawings or designs into wall art! You’ll learn how to take put your image onto a screen and use it to screen print multiple pieces. Your workshop fee includes your own screen, paper, and ink to keep.

Intro to Wheel Throwing 
Session 1 

Date: Tuesdays, September 17 – October 15
Time: 5pm-7pm
Learn the basics of wheel throwing and how to create cylinders, bowls, and mugs in addition to glazing techniques. Leave with your own unique, usable pieces.  
Cost: Students – $70   Faculty/Alumni – $85   Community Member – $100

Time: 6pm-8pm

Wheel Throwing II 

Date: Tuesdays, October 29 – November 26
Time: 6pm-8pm
Build off the basic skills you acquired from Intro to Wheel Throwing and take on a new challenge! Learn how to throw larger pieces and advanced design techniques for your own pieces.

Photography

Traditional Black and White Photography: Developing Film 

Date: Tuesday, September 24
Time: 5:30pm-8:30pm
Learn how to take an exposed roll of 35mm or 120 film and develop your images! Does not apply to color film or 4×5. (Students are expected to enter this workshop with a black and white roll of 35mm or 120 film already shot, so we can take that roll and see how the negatives turned out!)

Traditional Black and White Photography: Enlarging and Printing  

Date: Tuesday, October 22
Time: 4:30pm-8:30pm
Learn how to take a 35mm negative and enlarge it to print-size using enlargers and darkroom techniques. The concepts from this workshop can also be applied to enlarging 120 film or 4×5.

Fibers

Introduction to Crochet 

Date: Friday, October 25
Time: 1pm-4pm
Learn basic crocheting techniques while completing a small sample piece. A crochet hook and ball of yarn is included in the price.

Machine Sewing for Beginners 

Date: Wednesdays, November 13 – 20
Time: 5pm-8pm
Learn the basics of machine sewing by constructing your very own reusable grocery bag. You’ll learn how to set up a sewing machine, use and read sewing patterns, and basic sewing assembly.
Cost: Students – $40            Faculty/ Alumni- $50             Community Members – $60

Beading for Adventurers

Date: Saturday, November 23
Time: 12pm-5pm
Learn advanced beadwork techniques including brick stitching, bezeling, peyote stitching and more to make a piece of jewelry while using non-traditional objects such as feathers, old bangles, film slides, pearls, etc.

Metals

Working with Leather and Rawhide 

Date: Saturday, November 16
Time: 12pm-4pm
Discover the versatility of leather and the ancient traditions of bookbinding, drum making, jewelry and more. Learn how to form, press, dye, punch leather and rawhide in the process of making a book cover, bracelet or pin.
Cost: Students – $20        Faculty/Alumni – $25          Community Members – $30

Basics of Metalworking: Make a Silver Ring 

Date: Saturdays, November 2 – 9
Time: 12pm-4pm
Learn the basics of metalworking and stone-setting through the processes used in making your own unique silver ring. Little to no metalworking experience is required for this workshop as you will be learning the basics of soldering and bezel setting.

The Basics of Papermaking 

Date: Fridays, October 4 – 11
Time: October 4, 12:00pm-3:00pm

Learn how to make handmade paper sheets from recycled paper materials to use for drawing, printmaking or writing on.

Zines and Simple Binding Techniques 

Date: Thursdays, November 7 – 14
Time: 6:00pm-8:30pm
Learn the basic structure and process of creating single-page fold and accordion style zines and how to bind them with simple bookbinding techniques.

Hanji Box Making (Korean Paper)  

Date: Thursday, December 5
Time: 5pm-8pm
Construct your very own personal keepsake box decorated with traditional Korean paper.
