Workshops

Each semester the Studio Arts & Craft Centre offers short-term workshops to teach different skills and techniques. Attendees pay a fee to receive instruction and supplies and end up leaving with a piece(s) of their own, along with new skills to keep making on their own!

**The Studio Arts & Craft Centre reserves the right to cancel workshops due to low enrollment. In that case, attendees will be notified one day prior to the start date by 10am and will receive a full refund.**

MARCH

Papermaking

with MYRA ADAMS

Mondays, March 6 & 13

March 6, 5:30 – 8:30PM & March 13, 5:30 – 6:30PM

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

Learn how to make paper! We will process, pulp, and pull sheets of paper made from recycled scraps – what a great way to reuse paper! This is something you can learn in the Craft Centre and then do at home for future paper crafts.

Cyanotype

with MADDIE CAWKINS

Thursdays, March 9 & 16, 6:00 – 8:30PM 

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

By using a light sensitive liquid, coated sheets of paper will be turned into deep blue images called cyanotypes (the same process used to create blueprints). Participants will use photographic transparencies and object stencils to create the imagery. In this two-day class, participants will produce several prints to take home.

Archival Framing

Saturday, March 11, 1:00 – 4:00PM

Location: Union 183

This introductory workshop will cover the use of archival materials as well as types of mounting and cutting window mats so that you can frame artwork yourself. Bring a small piece of artwork that’s about 8×10” and we will frame it during our time together. All materials including the frame are included in the workshop fee.

Make a Pair of Enameled Earrings

with CHANCE GORDON

Mondays, April 3-17, 5:30 – 8:30PM

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

This workshop will explore some techniques of beginning metalsmithing that will allow you to make future metals projects. Students will learn the basics of enameling on copper sheet and learn multiple ways to apply enamel to the surface. Participants will have a finished pair of earrings at the end of the workshop as well as the skills to continue creating custom jewelry.

Intro to Machine Sewing

with ARIEL SCOTT

Tuesdays, April 4 & 11, 5:30 – 8:30PM

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

This workshop provides a complete walkthrough of how to use a basic sewing machine. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the machine technically as well as how to use, troubleshoot, and utilize it to make projects. You will also learn how to pattern and sew a small cushion and a basic tote bag you will be able to take home.

Intro to Wheel Throwing Session 3 – FULL

Wednesdays, April 5-26, 6:00 – 8:00PM

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

Take a spin on the potter’s wheel! In this intro wheel throwing class, participants will learn the basics of making pottery with the potter’s wheel. Three main forms will be covered on the wheel: the cup, bowl, and plate. Glazing will also be explored, and participants can expect to walk away with several fully finished pottery pieces. Workshop fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay with additional clay available for purchase; all glazes are included.

Screen Printing on Paper: Separations, Exposure, and Production – FULL

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

In this workshop you will learn how to translate imagery into a handmade screen print. Participants will be led through the process of developing their image, producing screens, and the process of printing. The printing process is done color by color. We will touch on some more advanced ink techniques for future use. Printing will be done on paper to create posters or other wall art. Workshop fee includes use of a screen plus paper, and ink that you get to keep!

Intro to Photography: Capturing on Black and White Film

Tuesdays, April 11-25

April 11, 5:30-7:30PM, April 18 & 25, 5:30-8:00PM

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of darkroom photography. Participants will learn how to shoot, develop, and print 35mm film. Using a 35mm film camera, this workshop will give a look at the process of analog photography from start to finish. (Craft Centre will loan you a 35mm camera if you do not own one.)

Stamp Making

In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of carving on linoleum and printing with the stamps they’ve created. Participants walk away with two stamps and the knowledge to continue creating unique art.

Sgraffito Cups – FULL

Wednesday, February 15, 6:00 – 8:00PM

Location: Craft Centre, Street level

Choose two premade cups and learn the basics of sgraffito! You will choose different colors to paint onto your cups and carve a pattern or design away to reveal the color of the clay underneath. Cups will be fired and ready for pickup within two weeks.

Intro to Stained Glass – FULL

In this workshop, you will learn how to score, cut, foil, solder, and assemble your own stained-glass motif. Class participants will choose their own colors for a sunrise pattern which they will be able to then assemble to make a hanging piece.
