Workshops

Each semester the Studio Arts & Craft Centre offers short-term workshops in each of our five areas to teach different skills and techniques. Attendees pay a fee to receive instruction and supplies and end up leaving with a piece(s) of their own, along with new skills to keep making on their own!

Linoleum Block Printing

Mondays, Jan 31 – Feb 28 / 6:00 – 8:00pm **(no workshop on Monday, Feb 14)**

This workshop is an introduction to the art of making prints from a linoleum block. Beginning with carving a linoleum block and ending with printing the inked block, this is a great process for those wanting to be introduced to printmaking. This process is used in both the fine art and craft worlds.

Intro to Wheel Throwing Session 1 *CLASS FULL*

Wednesdays, February 2 – 23 / 6:00 – 8:00pm

Take a spin on the potter’s wheel! In this intro wheel throwing class, participants will learn the basics of making pottery with the potter’s wheel. Three main forms will be covered on the wheel: the cup, bowl, and plate. Glazing will also be explored, and participants can expect to walk away with several fully finished pottery pieces. The workshop fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay with additional clay available for purchase; all glazes are included.

Intro to Wheel Throwing Session 2 *CLASS FULL*

Tuesdays, February 8 – March 1  / 6:00 – 8:00pm

Intro to Sewing *CLASS FULL*

Wednesdays, February 9 & 16  / 5:30 – 8:30pm 

This workshop provides a complete walkthrough of how to use a basic sewing machine. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the machine technically as well as how to use, troubleshoot, and utilize it to make projects. You will also learn how to pattern and sew a small cushion and a basic tote bag you will be able to take home.

Screen Printing on Paper: Separations, Exposure, and Production

Thursdays, February 17 – March 10

Feb 17 & 24 / 6:00 – 8:00pm, Mar 3 & 10 / 6:00 – 8:30pm

In this workshop, you will learn how to translate imagery into a handmade screenprint. Participants will be led through the process of developing their image, producing screens, and the process of printing. The printing process is done color by color. We will touch on some more advanced ink techniques for future use. Printing will be done on paper to create posters or other wall art. Workshop fee includes the use of a screen plus paper and ink that you get to keep!

Intro to Stained Glass *CLASS FULL*

Mondays, February 21 & 28 / 7:00 – 9:00pm

In this workshop you will learn how to score, cut, foil, solder, and assemble your own stained-glass motif. Class participants will choose their own colors for a sunrise pattern which they will be able to then assemble to make a hanging piece.

Paint the Milwaukee Flag

Wednesdays, February 23 & March 2

Feb 23 / 5:30 – 8:30pm, Mar 2 / 5:30 – 7:30pm

Although it hasn’t been officially adopted by the local government, the People’s Flag of Milwaukee is highly utilized and recognizable around town. This two-day workshop will outline the tracing method and painting of the People’s Flag. Heavy-duty canvas and outdoor housepaint will be used to create a durable and weather-resistant handmade flag.

Papermaking

Friday & Saturday, February 25 & 26

Feb 25 / 2:00 – 5:00pm, Feb 26 / 2:00 – 4:00pm

Learn how to make paper! We will process, pulp, and pull sheets of paper made from recycled scraps – what a great way to reuse paper! This is something you can learn in the Craft Centre and then do at home for future papercrafts.

Dry Point Intaglio

Tuesdays, March 1 – 15 / 6:00 – 8:00pm

This is an introductory course for intaglio printmaking. Participants will scratch linework into plates with a sharpened tip, ink them up, and use a printmaking press to transfer those drawings from the plate to paper.

Wheel Throwing: Lids for Pots     

Wednesdays, March 2 – 9 / 6:00 – 8:00pm

In this intermediate workshop participants will make lidded vessels. We will go over a few methods of lid making and how to make sure the lid and vessel fit together properly.

Some previous experience on the potter’s wheel is required for this workshop (Please contact the Craft Centre with questions
– craftctr@uwm.edu or 414-229-5535). The workshop fee includes clay.

Intro to Photography: Capturing on Black and White Film

Fridays, March 4 – 18 / 2:00 – 4:00pm

Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of darkroom photography. Participants will learn how to shoot, develop, and print 35mm film. Using a 35mm film camera, this workshop will give a look at the process of analog photography from start to finish. (Craft Centre will loan you a 35mm camera if you do not own one.)

Make a Pair of Enameled Earrings *CLASS FULL*

Mondays, March 7 & 14 / 6:00 – 8:00pm

This workshop will explore some techniques of beginning metalsmithing that will allow you to make future metals projects. Students will learn the basics of enameling on copper sheets and learn multiple ways to apply enamel to the surface. Participants will have a finished pair of earrings at the end of the workshop.

Cyanotype

Tuesdays, March 6 & 15  / 7:00 – 9:00pm 

By using a light-sensitive liquid, coated sheets of paper will be turned into deep blue images called cyanotypes (the same process used to create blueprints). Participants will use photographic transparencies and object stencils to create the imagery. In this two-day class, participants will produce several prints to take home.

Stamp Making *CLASS FULL*

Thursday, April 7 / 6:00 – 8:00pm

Location: Union 344, Union 3rd floor (Meet at the Info Desk and we’ll
walk-up together)

Come and learn the art of hand-carved rubber stamps. You’ll get to design your own stamp, learn the carving techniques, and print them. These stamps are great for cards, journals, planners, and whatever else you can think of!

Archival Framing

Saturday, April 9 / 1:00 – 4:00pm

Location: Union 183, Union campus level

This introductory workshop will cover the use of archival materials as well as types of mounting and cutting window mats so that you can frame artwork yourself. Bring a small piece of artwork that’s about 8×10” and we will frame it during our time together. All materials including the frame are included in the workshop fee.

Bookmaking *CLASS FULL*

Thursdays, April 14 & 21 / 6:00 – 8:00pm

Location: Union 346, Union 3rd floor (Meet at the Info Desk and we’ll
walk-up together)

Bookmaking is so exciting – you get to work with beautiful papers and other materials to make something special and useful! Plus once you learn how to do it, you can make books over and over. Bring your handmade paper and stamps you’ve made in other SACC workshops – or use some extras we’ll have on hand – and learn how to make two different kinds of books.

Field trip and sewing class at Madam Chino’s

Friday, April 22 / 12:30 – 4:30pm

(Arrive at Union Concourse by 12:15pm. Bus leaves at 12:30pm and returns by 4:30pm)

For Earth Week, we’ll be visiting the amazing space of Madam Chino! Madam Chino is alumna Vanessa Andrew who has built a remarkable fashion business since graduating from UWM. Basing much of
her own designs on reclamation of other materials, Vanessa is the perfect artist to lead students in a class on how to be more mindful consumers of fashion and how to use reclaimed materials to make new items.
