Ukrainian

The modern Ukrainian language as we know it today has been around since the late 18th century (although it was first developed in the 13th century after the fall of the Kievan Rus). It contains many similarities between Russian, Polish and Belarusian. Although mainly spoken in Ukraine, it’s also prevalent in many other countries, like the United States, Russia, Canada, Slovakia, Brazil, Poland and much more. In fact, more than 51 million people speak this Eastern Slavic language worldwide.

The popularity of the Ukrainian language is increasing, too. During the Soviet Era, Russian was the main language taught in schools within Ukraine. But since Ukraine declared independence in 1991, speaking the native language is growing rapidly.

At the UWM School of Continuing Education, you’ll find two levels of Ukrainian language courses. Learn vocabulary, grammar and syntax, correct pronunciation, the Cyrillic alphabet and conversation skills. In addition, you’ll also learn about this fascinating and beautiful culture.
