Ropes, fractions, and moduli spaces

This will be a discussion of the only actually cool math magic trick that I know of – John Conway’s tangle trick. Even schoolchildren can learn how to perform it, but for my money, the clearest conceptual explanation of why it works will take us to the interface of topology and algebraic geometry.
