“The mapping class group Mod(M) of a smooth manifold M is the group of diffeomorphisms of M, modulo isotopy. The study of mapping class groups interacts with many areas, including geometric topology, group theory, and dynamics. We explain some of these connections from the point-of-view of the Nielsen realization question, which was asked in different forms by Nielsen (1906) and Thurston (1977), and which seeks to understand (1) the algebraic structure of Mod(M), (2) dynamical properties of groups of diffeomorphisms, and (3) geometric structures on fiber bundles.”
