A recent article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel featured English Professor Derek Handley’s current project, “Mapping Racism & Resistance in Milwaukee County.” The project, co-directed with Geography Professor Anne Bonds and sponsored by a 2021 Fromkin Grant from UWM Libraries, documents restrictive housing covenants in Milwaukee County property deeds. These covenants explicitly barred black people, along with those from other ethnicities, from owning land or property.
