University Community World Music Ensemble

The University Community World Music Ensemble (UCWMC) is open to all community members (ages 12 and older) and UW-Milwaukee students with an interest in learning the musical techniques and performance styles of folk and popular genres from different corners of the globe. Regular offerings include Trinidadian steel pan (Steel PANthers) and Guatemalan marimba (Marimba Pantera), with other offerings available on a rotating basis depending on instructor availability. The UCWME is co-directed by Dr. Alex Wier (Assistant Professor and Area Head in percussion) and Jack Forbes (Lecturer in musicology/ethnomusicology). Previous music experience is encouraged but not required. No prior experience on these instruments is required.

The first UCWME meeting of each semester is in the Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, Room 280. Attendance is required. After the first organizational meeting, registrants may participate in rehearsals for either or both ensembles, based on interest and availability. Any questions can be directed to percussion@uwm.edu.

First Organizational meeting will be held at 6pm on February 1 at the UWM Zelazo Center, Room 280.

We will meet on Thursdays. Rehearsals begin on Thursday, Feb 8.

Steel PANthers rehearsals: 5:45pm – 7:15pm

Marimba Pantera rehearsals: 7:30pm – 9pm

Dates and locations to be announced.
