Mapping the World: Explore the American Geographical Society Library
Visit three outstanding collections located in the UWM Library and view some of their rare and fascinating treasures. The internationally-renowned “American Geographical Society Library,” formed in the early 1850s to promote the collection and diffusion of geographical and statistical information, is one of the premier collections of its kind in North America, containing over one million items dating from 1452, including maps, atlases, globes, books, periodicals and photographs. The “UWM Archives” features the history of the Milwaukee region. Explore unique collections that tell the story of Milwaukee from the 1800s to the present, including the city’s civil rights struggles, brewing history and diverse ethnic populations. “Special Collections” holds over 70,000 printed materials from the 15th century to the present, covering a wide range of disciplines and topics. They will offer a sampling, from early printed books to contemporary publications, and from fine press and artist’s books and to comic books and zines.
