Good morning, colleagues. Welcome back after the Spring break. Here is this week’s update:
Dean-searches update
- Zilber School of Public Health – we hope to conclude a successful search in the near future.
- College of Letters and Science – after meeting with the search and screen committee, we’ve narrowed the field to three candidates and plan campus visits during April. I’ll be sending an announcement with their CVs and itineraries later this week.
- College of Nursing – I meet with the search and screen committee chair later this week. We hope to bring finalists to campus by the end of April.
Kudos
– Amy Kalkbrenner, Public Health, received an NIH grant for nearly $2.375 M for a research project entitled, “Air-pollution risk for Autism and ADHD – cross-disorder insights and genetic liability.” Excellent news, Amy!
– Department of Biological Sciences graduate student Bennett Hardy was awarded a fellowship from the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP). This prestigious fellowship will support his research in Dr. Emily Latch’s lab, combining extensive fieldwork with genomic tools to conserve the Cascades frog in the Pacific Northwest. Congratulations to Bennett on this outstanding achievement!
– Marcy Bidney, curator, American Geographical Society Library, has been selected to receive the 2017 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) De Gruyter European Librarianship Study Grant for her project, “Where the Water Flows: Documenting Collections of late 19th and early 20th century Nautical Charts.” Kudos, Marcy!
– Richard P. Smiraglia, Information Studies, joins a distinguished group of scholars who have been selected as a KNAW Visiting Professor at the DANS Institute in the Netherlands. Congratulations, Richard!
Paula Rhyner
Dr. Paula Rhyner, who joined the faculty at UWM in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in 1983, will be retiring from the university this July. Paula has been recognized for her outstanding accomplishments in interdisciplinary, collaborative scholarship, teaching, and service. Throughout her career, she has made significant contributions to UWM, particularly through leadership roles such as Coordinator of the UWM Faculty Mentoring Program, Interim Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Health Sciences, and most recently, as Deputy to the Provost for Continuing Education and Outreach. I will announce plans for her replacement at Continuing Education soon.
In Memoriam
The School of Education shared that an obituary was published for Randy Goree, a former Senior Lecturer in Curriculum and Instruction at UWM, who passed away on February 19, 2017. The Randy Goree Scholarship Fund has been established at UWM to honor his memory. More details are included in the obituary.
In the News
– CBS 58 aired a great story about UWM’s Innovative Weather Center.
