Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update:

Reminder: Zilber School of Public Health Dean candidate feedback due today

ZSPH Dean Candidate feedback is due by 5 p.m. today. Please use the online feedback forms linked on the finalists page.

 Kudos

– Gladys Mitchell-Walthour, Africology, has been awarded the 2017 Morris Fromkin Memorial Grant for her proposal, “Black Brazilian Social Justice Activism in the Digital Age.” Dr. Mitchell-Walthour will present a lecture on her project in fall 2017 at the Golda Meir Library. Congratulations, Gladys!

– The Center for 21st Century Studies’ latest volume of essays, Anthropocene Feminism, has just been published by the University of Minnesota Press. Edited by former director Richard Grusin (English), the volume offers feminist and queer theory alternatives to thinking about the Anthropocene. Well done!

– Evan Taucher, PSOA graduate student of Rene Izquierdo, won first prize at the annual Schubert Club competition in Minneapolis. The prize was $2000 and a concert in 2017. Bravo, Evan!

– Rebecca Dunham, English, has a new poetry collection, Cold Pastoral: Poems, published by Milkweed Editions, that has been receiving accolades: 15 of the Most Anticipated Poetry Collections of 2017: Publisher’s Weekly Review; 25 Protest Poetry Collections to Read Right Now; a previous book, The Flight Cage, was included in the list “40 New Feminist Classics You Should Read.” Impressive work, Rebecca!

– Deborah Hannula, Psychology, co-edited “The Hippocampus from Cells to Systems: Structure, Connectivity, and Functional Contributions to Memory and Flexible Cognition,” published by Springer International Publishing. Congratulations, Deborah!

– The Institute of World Affairs continues to be recognized from the Journal Sentinel earlier, to this blog. Congratulations to Doug Savage for all his hard work on a great Fireside series this year!

The Week        

Monday

My day starts with my weekly meeting with Robin Van Harpen and a joint meeting with the SPC committee. I also have meetings with a number of my direct reports, Stan Stojkovic, and UC Chair John Reisel. The Chancellor’s Cabinet meets and I have a meeting with my staff.

Tuesday

There is a deans’ morning meeting, followed by meetings with Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska, David Clark, Brett Peters, and Trudy Turner. I have a meeting on advising, I’m attending the Academic Staff Senate meeting, and the Academic Leadership Council meets. Agenda items include the Dash Emergency Grant and the Internship Database.

Wednesday

I have a UWM Foundation Board of Directors meeting, a meeting with ASC Chair Rebecca Freer and Vice Chair Sue Cashin, a CEMAT co-chairs meeting, a campus budget meeting, and a one-on-one meeting with the Chancellor. I also have a meeting with Zilber School of Public Health leadership to discuss the dean candidates and I’m attending part of the Milwaukee Veterans Town Hall (see below).

Thursday

I meet with the Center for 21st Century Studies Advisory Board, I meet with the Italian Consul General, who is visiting UWM, and I have meetings with Kim Litwack, Michael Doylen, Paula Rhyner, and I’m making remarks at the CIE-sponsored “Uni-Tea” (University Tea, Unity), which will be a social event for the campus community supporting international and immigrant students. I’m also attending the Faculty Senate meeting.

Friday

I have several budget meetings, including the Budget Model Support Team.

Whitaker Award for Academic Staff – Deadline March 23

The Open Access Publishing Fund supports researchers who want to make their articles open access in journals with article-processing charges. The fund provides partial financial assistance towards enabling free worldwide access to the UWM research findings immediately upon publication. These scholarly articles are also permanently archived in the UWM Digital Commons.

Other

England retained the six nations rugby cup by beating Scotland.  This is their 17th consecutive win, equaling the All Blacks record for wins in a row.
