Seeds of Culture: Portraits and Voices of Native American Women Opening Reception

November 16, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Matika Wilbur’s (Swinomish and Tulalip) extensive photography portfolio captures the diversity and beauty of contemporary Native America while challenging its stereotypical representations. Wilbur’s work combines imagery and stories of Native Americans in the United States to create conversations about their experiences. Her recent publication, Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America quickly became a New York Times Best Seller and tells the stories of members from each of the federally recognized tribes in the United States.

The Union Art Gallery is honored to present Seeds of Culture: The Portraits and Voices of Native American Women which combines audio with stories from those photographed to create an immersive experience. The exhibition will run from November 16 through December 15, 2023. In conjunction with the exhibition opening, Matika Wilbur will speak on Thursday, November 16 from 6-7 p.m. in the UWM Student Union Ballroom on the campus level at 2200 E Kenwood Blvd.

This exhibition is co-sponsored by the Union Art Gallery, Sociocultural Programming, UWM Women’s Resource Center, Cultures and Communities, and Electa Quinney Institute for American Indian Education.
