Since the first piece of artwork was acquired in 1962 and the opening of the Union Art Gallery in 1972, the Union Art Gallery has amassed close to 300 artworks created by UW-Milwaukee students. While many pieces in the Union Art Gallery collection have been displayed around the UW-Milwaukee campus, there are many that have remained unseen since their acquisition. Evolving Expressions: A Transformative Look at UW-Milwaukee Student Art features pieces from the Union Art Gallery collection that have rarely or never been displayed and presents a glimpse into the evolution of art styles, subject matter, and techniques UW-Milwaukee students have gravitated towards.
