Richard Leson and the Bute Psalter

Associate Professor Richard Leson’s article, “The Pathways of Salvation: Spatiality and Exegesis in the Bute Psalter,” published in the journal Gesta, explores how illustrations of dynamic motion in a French prayer book of the late thirteenth century conditioned the devotional practices of the manuscript’s original lay owner. In the work of the manuscript’s painter, lively images of figures moving through the interstices of letters and across distances literal and figural signaled rigorous spiritual work and ultimately aided the viewer’s assimilation of sophisticated interpretive practices traditionally associated with avowed religious.
