Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Dave Edwards (WUWM) has been awarded the 2018 U:SA Madison Hodges Innovator Award for Public Media Advancement. This national award reflects the organization’s mission to “strengthen the public media system through improving the relationship between broadcasters and their licensees to help the station/licensee transition to success.” The award recognizes the individual’s attempts to make a greater impact in their communities and their profession as a public media professional. Congratulations, Dave!

Milwaukee Athletics

Milwaukee head volleyball coach Susie Johnson wore a microphone on the sidelines during the Panthers’ home match against Youngstown State earlier this fall. Check out some of the sideline insights, reactions, and features from behind the scenes with the Panthers.

The Milwaukee women’s soccer team won its fourth straight Horizon League regular-season title last week—the 18th time in the last 19 years it has claimed the title! With the crown, the team hosts the Horizon League Tournament next week. Semifinals are at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 1. The championship will be played on Saturday, November 3 at 6 p.m. Come on out to Engelmann Stadium and cheer on your Panthers!

The Week

Monday

As usual, I start my week by meeting with Robin Van Harpen, followed by my standing meeting with Mark Harris, and the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet. I have a meeting regarding the Lubar School dean search, my weekly staff meeting, and a CEMAT Executive meeting.

Tuesday

Today, I have the deans’ morning meeting, an International Education Advisory Council meeting, a meeting with Ray Fleming, and the monthly UW Colleges restructuring meeting.

Wednesday

In the morning, I have a meeting with a number of my direct reports, the Chapman Hall Spirit Day, and the ISS Executive Sponsor meeting. In the afternoon, I have my weekly meeting with the Chancellor.

Thursday

Today, I will attend the APBC meeting, followed by a meeting with Student Association leadership, a Milwaukee Economic Development Initiative (MEDI) meeting with the Chancellor, my standing meeting with Pat Borger, and an External Strategic Partnerships meeting.

Friday

Friday I will have a few meetings with my direct reports and will also spend some time on administrative work.

Announcements

Bake Sale

The College of Health Sciences, the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, and the School of Education will host a Bake Sale on Tuesday, October 30 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the first floor of Enderis Hall. All proceeds will go to the United Way – State Employee Combined Campaign (SECC).

Kirsten Bönker (Bielefeld University) will present, “A Window to the World: Watching Television, Emotional Bonding, and Political Communication in the Late Soviet Union,” on Wednesday, October 31 at 12 p.m. in Curtin 939.

Faculty Awards

The Faculty Awards and Recognition Committee is accepting nominations for the 2019 Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award. Nominations may be submitted by students, faculty, academic staff, departments, and organizations. Submission deadline is October 31.

Teaching & Learning Symposium

Submit a proposal for the 4th Annual UWM Teaching and Learning Symposium by November 1.

Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership (WWHEL)

The UWM WWHEL chapter will be holding a fall panel discussion entitled, “UWM Women of Wisdom,” on Thursday, November 1 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Library 4th Floor Conference Center. The discussion will celebrate learning, leadership, and longevity.

Vilas Distinguished Lecture/George F. Kennan Distinguished Lecture

Amitav Ghosh, one of the most important novelists and essayists of our time, presents, “Embattled Earth: Commodities, Conflict, and Climate Change in the Indian Ocean,” on Thursday, November 1 at 7 p.m. in the Peck School of the Arts Music Recital Hall. There will be a reception at 6 p.m. and book signing after the program.

Panther Shop Discount Days

The Panther Shop will be offering 25% off to faculty, staff, and student employees when they show their work IDs or name badges on Thursday and Friday, November 1 and 2. The discount is for apparel only and may be combined with clearance merchandise. This is the perfect time to grab spirit gear for homecoming week!

From the Center for 21st Century Studies

Join us on Friday, November 2 in Curtin 175 at 3:30 p.m. for, “All Derangements, Great and Small,” a roundtable discussion with acclaimed author Amitav Ghosh, Richard Grusin (C21), Arijit Sen (Architecture), Jasmine Alinder (History), Rina Ghose (Geography), and Anne Bonds (Geography). The roundtable will discuss the “great derangement” of climate change and how those in the humanities can respond to and resist it.

C21 invites proposals for its Collaboratory program, which offers grants for research collaborations across disciplines among faculty, graduate students, and academic staff. Proposals are due November 19.

Archaeological Institute of America – Milwaukee Society: Norton Lecture

Eric H. Cline (George Washington University) presents, “1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed,” on Sunday, November 4 at 3 p.m. in Sabin Hall G90. This illustrated lecture is based on his book of the same title.

Award-winning poet, critic, and essayist Michael Dowdy will deliver a craft talk entitled, “Poets, Critics, and the Limits of Literary Citizenship,” on Tuesday, November 6 at 7 p.m. at Woodland Pattern Book Center.

Make a Difference Day

Make a Difference Day Fall will take place on Saturday, November 10 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Kick-off for the event will be held in the Wisconsin Room in the Union.

2019-2020 FAFSA Filing Has Begun

Students attending college during fall 2019 and/or spring 2020 terms should complete the 2019-20 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Think Free! Think Fast! Think FAFSA!

2019 Common Reading Experience

Are you interested in participating in the text selection process for the 2019 Common Reading Experience? New Student Programs is looking for a multi-disciplinary committee of dedicated faculty, staff, and students to serve on the 2019 Common Reading Experience Text Selection Committee. New Student Programs is also soliciting recommendations for the 2019 text at this time. Please fill out the forms on our webpage to indicate your interest or recommendation.

Community Gathering

You are invited to a community-wide gathering today (October 29) at 7 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid (6880 N. Green Bay Road, Glendale) to mourn the lives that were lost in the attack at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh during Shabbat services on Saturday.
