Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Purush Papatla (Purush is the Associate Dean in the Lubar School of Business and also the interim Co-Director of the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute) was quoted in an article in Forbes magazine on accountability in digital marketing. Well done, Purush!

Milwaukee Athletics
The Milwaukee Athletic Department has launched a new comprehensive integrated marketing and brand campaign around the “United We Roar” slogan that the department has made its own over the past few school years. The multi-faceted and multiple-year plan will be broadcast on social media, grassroot marketing efforts, and through a market-wide advertising campaign debuting this month.

The Week

Monday
This will be a shorter week on campus since I will be in Taipei the latter part of the week (It will be a very short trip). I start Monday morning with my weekly meeting with Robin Van Harpen. Tim Danielson will join us later. I’m attending a Diversity Framework Steering Committee meeting, I have a campus budget planning meeting, the Chancellor’s Executive and Expanded Cabinet, and I have my weekly staff meeting. In the evening, there is the Bader Philanthropies Grand Opening Celebration of its Global Headquarters in the Harambee neighborhood.

Tuesday
Another day of meetings, including Tom Luljak, Scott Gronert, Michael Doylen, and Joan Prince. I have a standing meeting with the Chancellor and Alan Shoho, a CEMAT leads monthly meeting, and an advisory board meeting of the Chancellor’s Committee on Hispanic Serving Initiatives.

Wednesday
I meet with Stan Stojkovic, Alan Shoho, Kim Litwack, and Trudy Turner.

Thursday-Friday 
I will be in Taiwan as a follow up visit regarding the historic three-way partnership between UWM, Chung Yuan Christian University, and FoxConn, with the first internship program with FoxConn.

Graduate School Open House
The UWM Graduate School is hosting its 5th Annual Graduate School Open House on November 1 from 5 – 7 p.m. in the UWM Union. Please spread the word out to any prospective graduate students.

From the Center for 21st Century studies
C21 invites proposals for its collaborative program, which offers grants for research collaborations across disciplines among faculty, graduate students, and academic staff. Proposals are due November 19.

C21 celebrates its 50th anniversary with an archive dedication on Thursday, October 25 at 3:30 p.m. in Curtin 175 and symposium on Friday, October 26 from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. in Curtin 175.

October 22-28 is International Open Access Week. You can learn more about the UWM Open Access  Publication Fund that supports researchers who want to make their articles open access in journals with article processing charges. You are also encouraged to submit your scholarship for long-term preservation and worldwide electronic accessibility to the UWM Digital Commons.

An Evening of Conversation and Bilingual Readings
Gaël Faye, Franco-Rwandese Rapper, Composer, and Novelist presents, “A Celebration of Petit Pays and its Translation Small Country,” on Wednesday, October 24 at 5 p.m. at the Hefter Conference Center.

Free Access to The Chronicle of Higher Education for UWM Faculty and Staff
UW-Milwaukee has obtained a campus-wide license for all faculty, staff, and students to access The Chronicle of Higher Education website and its content free of charge.  At a computer on campus, users can go directly to www.chronicle.com to view content.  See information on off campus access, as well as license features, provided by The Chronicle.

The UWM Food Center and Pantry Campus-Wide Fall Food Drive
The UWM Food Center and Pantry campus-wide Fall Food Drive runs through October 31. Donate non-perishable goods to collection boxes in over 30 buildings across campus. You can also volunteer to help collect, inventory, and shelve food throughout the month. Email: foodassist@uwm.edu to get involved and find out more.

From the English Department
The UWM English Department hosts a panel discussion on creative writers working in nonprofit careers on Tuesday, October 23 at 7 p.m. at the Hefter Conference Center. Five writers and artists will discuss their work in the community, followed by a reading of their own creative work and a reception.

Other
Wimbledon changes its rules! Also, in China, a giant cave was just discovered.
