Good morning, colleagues, and happy Thanksgiving! Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Adam Wickersham (Lubar School of Business) was recognized as one of BizTimes 2020 Notable Veteran Executives of Southeastern Wisconsin. Adam also served on the Veteran’s Advisory Council and continues to advance veterans’ causes within and outside UWM. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Adam!

Mark Netzloff (English) published a book monograph, Agents Beyond the State: The Writings of English Travelers, Soldiers, and Diplomats in Early Modern Europe (Oxford University Press). Well done, Mark!

Derek B. Counts (Art History) and his colleagues have published Visualizing Votive Practice: Exploring Limestone and Terracotta Sculpture from Athienou-Malloura through 3D Models (Grand Forks, ND: 2020). VVP is an innovative, open-access, digital monograph that explores votive sculptures excavated from the site of Athienou-Malloura (Cyprus) by the Athienou Archaeological Project, which Derek co-directs. The project was generously funded by UWM RACAS and RGI grants. Congratulations, Derek!

Lorraine Malcoe and the Zilber School of Public Health received a COVID-19 rapid response grant from the Zilber Family Foundation entitled, “A Coordinated Community-Driven Response to COVID-19 in Milwaukee’s Black Communities,” that will focus on minimizing the immediate economic, social, and health impacts of the pandemic within Black communities in Milwaukee. Well done, Lorraine!

Kimberly Blaeser (English and American Indian Studies) is featured in a newly developed Library of Congress audio collection curated by U. S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo. Included in the interactive story map, “Living Nations, Living Words,” Kimberly reads and discusses her piece, “Poem on Disappearance.” Congratulations, Kim!

In the News

Helen Meier (Public Health) was interviewed for another NPR article for her work on health effects of past housing discrimination.

Lauren Meyers (University of Texas-Austin), the speaker at last week’s Marden Lecture in Mathematics, was featured in a WUWM report on the coronavirus. Included in the report is a clip from her lecture.
