Graduate Student Colloquium: William Langhoff

November 7, 2017 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Quantum Mechanics: How does it work?

William Langhoff
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
PhD Graduate Student

“Many have heard about the strange phenomena of quantum mechanics. Pop-science writers often talk about ‘superposition of states’, ‘wave function collapse’, and ‘uncertainty’. In this talk, we will investigate some of the mathematical theory of quantum mechanics. We will begin with a brief detour into classical mechanics, simply to set the stage. Then, we will abandon the world of classical physics and begin to explore the quantum landscape. We will examine some basic examples of quantum systems, from a mathematical point of view. No background in physics will be needed to understand this talk”.
