UWM Designated SOA Center of Actuarial Excellence

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) proudly shares the news that the Society of Actuaries (SOA) has designated UWM’s Actuarial Science Program as one of 30 Centers of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). The CAE status recognizes programs that meet strict criteria in quality of curriculum, number and quality of graduates, qualified faculty, strong ties to business, and beneficial research and scholarship. As of January 2016, there are only 16 other universities in the United States with this distinction; and 13 international programs in Australia, Canada, and Hong Kong.

The designation is awarded for a period of five years beginning January 6, 2016. The Department of Mathematical Sciences houses all of the University’s Actuarial programs: BA in Actuarial Science, MS in Mathematics (option in actuarial science), PhD in Mathematics (concentration in actuarial science). The SOA’s evaluation committee noted the strong relationships that UWM faculty have with students, the “strong outcomes” (such as improved exam passing rates) achieved through a Northwestern Mutual gift, and its meeting the “mission of access” for students in the region.

The department would like to take this opportunity to thank the program’s many stakeholders—students, alumni, employers, leadership of the College of Letters & Science, UWM Foundation, and all the corporate partners—as without their continuing support, the program would not have achieved this recognition.
