Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

– Congratulations to Christopher Kupitz and Marius Schmidt, Physics, whose paper, “Macromolecular Diffractive Imaging Using Imperfect Crystals,” was published in the current issue of Nature.

– Diane Reddy, Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; Psychology, was invited by Desire2Learn to be part of their inaugural EduFan Council of innovators in education. Congratulations, Diane!

– Pradeep Rohatgi, Materials Science and Engineering, was elected to the Fellowship of the Indian Institute of Metals. He will be honored on March 12 at the IIM Delhi Chapter in India. A well-deserved honor, Pradeep!

 Patrick Brady, Jolien Creighton, Alan Wiseman, and Xavier Siemens, Physics, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for their roles in the discovery of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory — LIGO. Read the editorial in the Journal Sentinel. Congratulations, all!

 The Week:

Monday
We continue this week our recruitment and retention meetings with the schools and colleges. This morning, we will be at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. This meeting will be followed by the Chancellor’s weekly cabinet meeting. I have my regular one-on-one meeting with Robin Van Harpen and also the weekly staff meeting in the late afternoon.

Tuesday
The day will be filled with direct report meetings – including my monthly meetings with Stan Stojkovic and Tom Lipinski. In the afternoon, we have the College of Nursing’s Enrollment and Retention Incentives meeting.

Wednesday
In the morning, I continue meetings with direct reports including Alan Shoho and Brett Peters. There is also a visit with ACE Fellow Dr. Jesse Mendez. In the afternoon, I have my monthly meeting with Student Association President Mike Sportiello and Vice President Brandi Hernandez. The College of Health Sciences will be holding their Enrollment and Retention Incentives meeting later in the day.

Thursday
The APBC Meeting will be held in the morning, followed by a Social Entrepreneurship, Justice, and Equity Compact meeting with the Chancellor. In the afternoon, I have my monthly meetings with Scott Emmons and Sally Lundeen, along with attending the Faculty Senate meeting.

Friday
I have a meeting with a direct report in the morning. In the afternoon, I have my weekly meeting with the Chancellor, along with my monthly meeting with Academic Staff Committee Chair Robin Weigert.

Announcements

Educational Technology Fee Call for Proposals
Proposals are requested for student technology-related projects, funded by the educational technology fee and to be reviewed by the Ed Tech Fee Advisory Committee. Project proposals should be submitted electronically on the Educational Technology Fund Form A to Laura Pedrick at lpedrick@uwm.edu no later than midnight, March 7, 2016. More information.

From CEMAT
The Chancellor’s Enrollment Management Action Team (CEMAT) is currently developing UWM’s first Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) plan. The SEM team will solicit campus-wide input during the spring semester, and plans to finalize the plan by summer of 2016. February 12-21, 2016: The 19th Annual Festival of Films in French, organized by the UWM French program, brings a rich array of French language films to Milwaukee at the UWM Union Cinema.

Online Program Council
The Online Program Council meets this Friday, February 19, from 10:30-noon in Lubar S250. Agenda items include Online Assessment (Dev Venugopalan, Academic Affairs); A Certificate in a Master’s: A 2-in-1 Approach that is Attracting New Students (Simone Conceicao, Administrative Leadership); and an Update on Online Enrollment (Laura Pedrick, Academic Affairs).

From the LGBT Resource Center
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center is sponsoring and hosting the UW-Milwaukee Annual Drag Show on February 27 at the Milwaukee Theatre. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m.

From French & Italian Comparative Literature
Robin Pickering-Iazzi, FICL, will be speaking about her new book on the Mafia in Italy on Wednesday, February 17 at Boswell books on Downer. Come hear the interesting stories and enjoy learning about the impact of the real life Italian Mafia.

Please join Jude Rathburn, Lubar School of Business, and Dylan Barth, CETL, in a two-part discussion (2/24 and 3/9) on Christina Baldwin and Ann Linnea’s book, “The Circle Way: A Leader in Every Chair.” Information and registration.

Call for Submissions
Women’s and Gender Studies proudly announces its annual UWM Student Research Paper and Project Contest. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit research papers or projects having to do with women, gender, sexuality, feminism, or feminist thinking that were completed for UWinteriM, spring, summer, or fall 2015 courses at UWM. The deadline for submissions is February 25. For more information and a submission form, please call 229-5918 or stop by the main office Curtin Hall, 535.

The UWM Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) is pleased to announce the Kristin Ruggiero Research Award. The award supports advanced undergraduate and graduate student field research in Latin America and the Caribbean. All students from UWM, in any discipline, are eligible. Application deadline is March 11.

Beta Alpha Psi business fraternity, the AARP, and the CCBLLR are hosting a no-cost tax preparation clinic on a few Saturday mornings from now until the end of tax season at Cambridge Commons. There are no age or income restrictions to receive services by this fine group of UWM accounting major volunteers!

Tinker Field Research Awards
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), in partnership with the Master in Sustainable Peacebuilding Program (MSP), is pleased to announce 2016 Tinker Field Research Awards, with funding from the Tinker Foundation and J.M. Kohler Foundation. Tinker Field Research Awards support pre-dissertation graduate field research in Latin America and the Caribbean (defined by the Tinker Foundation as Portuguese- or Spanish-speaking).
