September 8, 2015  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good Morning, Colleagues.

Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs:

First Friday

– Student Affairs will host the first “First Friday” of the academic year this coming Friday (September 11) from 4 – 6 p.m. in the Union Alumni Fireside Lounge. The theme is Sharing Successes, Empowering Advocates. The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for LGBT+ Advocacy, the LGBT Resource Center, and the Military and Veterans Resource Center will share their successes in advocating for students and inform attendees how they can become stronger student advocates. The 20th anniversary of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for LGBT+ Advocacy’s founding will also be celebrated with cake!

Kudos

– As referenced in the Chancellor’s Plenary, UWM has received notice from Congresswoman Gwen Moore’s office of a nearly $400,000 DOE grant for graduate assistance in areas of national need (GAANN). The GAANN Program provides grants to academic departments and programs of institutions of higher education to support graduate fellowships for students with excellent academic records who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in their course of study at the institution.

– Jennifer Jordan, Sociology and Urban Studies, was interviewed on NPR’s food website, The Salt. Congratulations, Jennifer!

The Week:

Tuesday
This Tuesday replaces some of the Monday calendaring. We have the Chancellor’s Cabinet meeting (which is normally on a Monday). I also have my weekly meeting with the Chancellor and a number of meetings with direct reports including Joey Zafra, Paula Rhyner, and Phyllis King.

Wednesday
In the morning, I meet with CHS in preparation for the presentation of the Masters in Healthcare Administration that will be presented to the Board of Regents on Thursday. V/C Michael Laliberte, Phyllis King, and I will also meet to further our discussion on collaboration with MPS schools. The meeting of the Budget Planning Task Force takes up most of the remainder of the day (noon – 3).

Thursday-Friday
I’ll be attending the Board of Regents meeting, held at UW-Whitewater, and the inauguration of the UW-W Chancellor, Beverly Kopper. BOR agenda outline.
UWM’s items include approval of a Master of Healthcare Administration.

Friday
I hope to make it back to Milwaukee for the First Friday celebration (see above).

Announcements

 UWM Homecoming
The Homecoming Committee is excited to reboot UWM Homecoming this year starting with Chancellor Mone’s Inauguration on October 2 and concluding on October 10 with the Panther Prowl, Family Weekend, Panther Fandemonium, Club Football, and other exciting events. On Saturday, October 10 we are expecting many visitors to campus – alumni, Panther Families, and community members, along with our students. We are hoping to offer many open house style events from noon – 3 p.m. so our visitors can see many campus buildings, hidden gems, and enjoy a variety of presentations or hands-on experiences.

This is where we need you and your unit!

Some examples of open house activities may be:

  • A presentation about study abroad hosted in Garland
  • A lab experiment in your campus building/lab
  • A tour of the geology museum
  • Career counselors available in the Career Planning and Resource Center

If you are available to host something on October 10 anytime from 12 – 3 p.m., please contact Keri Duce at klduce@uwm.edu so she can add it to the schedule.

From the Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies
– Nancy Yeide will present the Faye Sigman “Woman of Valor” lecture, “Women’s Work: Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Collecting in Berlin, 1880-1930,” on Thursday, September 10 at 6:15 p.m. at the Milwaukee Art Museum, 700 N. Art Museum Drive.

From the Career Planning & Resource Center
– The UWM Career Planning & Resource Center invites you to attend its Open House today from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Mellencamp 128. More information.

Student Success Collaborative – update from Gesele Durham
– UWM’s partnership with the Student Success Collaborative (SSC) from the Education Advisory Board will be changing given the recent agreement to expand our relationship to include additional functionality. The enhanced version will provide comprehensive, one-stop student success communication and case management functionality that will extend the reach and impact of SSC’s predictive analytics. As part of the December cohort, training and administrative set-up will begin in earnest later this year and flow into 2016. More detailed information about the SSC. As additional information becomes available, this website will be updated. You can also review a webinar about the expanded version.

From UITS
– The Microsoft Office 365 Outlook Web App (OWA) interface changes frequently to keep pace with the dynamic business environment that it’s designed to serve. For fall of 2015, OWA will sport a simplified, cleaner user interface to help you work more efficiently and will now be referred to as “Outlook on the web.” Microsoft has deployed this new interface along with new features to help you be more efficient, stay on top of your inbox, and better manage your calendar. You can find more information about the recent changes by visiting the UWM Knowledgebase.

– A recent update to “Outlook on the web” (formerly OWA) for Office 365 has changed the default method of how a user replies to an email. Combining “reply” and “reply all” into one button and setting the default to “reply all” could cause users to inadvertently reply to all users in an email thread when they intended to reply to a single sender. If you are interested in how to change your default behavior, please visit the UWM Knowledgebase.
