Are you interested in helping other UWM faculty or staff informally resolve conflicts?

The UWM Ombuds Council is currently seeking 10 volunteers from faculty and staff to serve on the UWM Ombuds Council. All UWM Faculty, Academic Staff and University Staff are eligible to apply. Applications due October 12, 2018 (*Update: The application deadline has been extended to October 22, 2018*). You can learn more about the Ombuds program and current members and watch current members talk about the Council.

About the Council:
The Ombuds Council is a group of trained UWM employees who are volunteers. They function as the first level of contact to provide informal conflict resolution services to UWM employees. The Ombuds Council is an independent, informal, neutral and confidential resource that provides assistance to members of the University community in exploring options to resolve problems, complaints and conflicts at a preliminary and informal level. This assistance functions as an early opportunity to explore options outside of formal administrative channels, supplementing them, but not replacing them. The Ombuds Council serves as a resource for those who seek informal guidance on policies, procedures and regulations affecting faculty and staff. Please feel free to go to the UWM Ombuds Council website to learn more about the Council and its activities.

What is the commitment?
UWM Council members rotate through “on-call” schedule approximately 4 times a semester and 10-12 times a calendar year. On-Call schedules are 3 days a week (Monday-Wednesday or Thursday-Saturday), and on-call members handle 1-2 contacts each week, sometimes following up on the “visitor’s” concerns after the initial contact. There is a monthly meeting that typically lasts about an hour. A new Ombudsperson can expect to commit additional afternoon for an onboarding training process.

Who can apply?
Applications are open to all UWM faculty and staff. Faculty from the UWM College of General Studies are especially encouraged to apply.

How do I apply?
Please send a letter of intent and a resume to Dr. Nadya Fouad at nadya@uwm.edu. Applications are due 10/22/18*. Interviews will be scheduled after all applications are reviewed.
