Michael Mirer’s (JAMS) co-authored paper, “The virus takes the field: Asserting sports journalistic authority when the games shut down,” has been selected for the Sports Communication Interest Group’s Top Papers Session at the Annual International Communication Association Conference to be held in Paris this May. Congratulations, Michael!

Anne Bonds (Geography) received the 2022 E. Willard and Ruby S. Miller Award from the American Association of Geographers. This award “recognizes members of the Association who have made truly outstanding contributions to the geographic field due to their special competence in teaching or research.” Well done, Anne!

Dawn Scher Thomae (Anthropology) will receive this year’s Society for American Archaeology award for Excellence in Collections-based Research and Education at the annual meeting in Chicago on April 1. Congratulations, Dawn!

Dante Salto (Administrative Leadership) and an international collaborative research team from five countries received a $75K grant from the Spencer Foundation for their project, “Crossing Borders to Connect Routes: Researching with education communities to promote equity and fight racism towards immigrants in a post-pandemic world.” Well done, Dante!

Military Friendly has designated UW-Milwaukee a Military Friendly School for 2022-2023. We jumped two tiers this year, from Silver to TOP TEN! Kudos to MAVRC (Military and Veterans Resource Center), VACC (Veterans Advisory Council to the Chancellor) and Student Affairs.

Executive Director of Student Experience and Talent 

The Division of Enrollment Management invites you to attend the public forums for the inaugural Executive Director of Student Experience and Talent. The Office of Student Experience and Talent (SET) is an innovative, new, collaborative office for students, faculty, and employers to collectively advance student work experience. We invite the whole UWM community to participate and offer feedback on each of the candidates. More information.

Nadine Kozak (SOIS) discussed the proposed Wisconsin Data Protection Act on WPR’s Central Time with Rob Ferrett.

G. Kevin Spellman (Business) recently spoke with WPR’s Ideas Network about why inflation keeps going up and whether there’s relief in sight.

Daniel J. Russo (Media Studies, MA alum) appeared on Newsroom Live with Pamela Brown on CNN to discuss recent controversies with Joe Rogan and Spotify.

Marc Tasman (Digital Arts and Culture; JAMS) was interviewed by Sam Kramer about social media and the Ukraine-Russia war. The episode aired on Milwaukee’s FOX6 News on March 6. He spoke again on this topic with Neville Bell and Simone Clarke-Cooper on Jamaica’s popular morning show, Smile Jamaica, on March 10.

Bettina Arnold (Anthropology) speaks about the complexities of bringing ancient beer back to life in the modern world in an article featured in Good Beer Hunting.

Milwaukee Athletics 

For the first time in the six-year history of the Elevator Pitch competition, the Milwaukee Athletic Department has announced that two winners were crowned at the conclusion of this year’s event. Ari Miller, a junior from the volleyball team, and Anna Lutz, a freshman from the women’s basketball team, both emerged from a field of 17 Panther student athlete competitors with the most polished and captivating pitches of the night and made it impossible for the judges to declare a lone winner.

The Week 

Monday 

I start the week with my standing meeting with Robin Van Harpen, followed by a Chancellor meeting, my weekly check-in with Dave Clark and Kay Eilers, and my weekly staff meeting. I also have two meetings with Provosts.

Tuesday 

In the morning, I have a Coronavirus Management Team (CMT) Leadership meeting, the Faculty and Staff Town Hall meeting, a Pre-Engineering Program meeting, my monthly meeting with Brett Peters, and my standing meeting with Tim Behrens and Amy Harley. In the afternoon, Kay Eilers and I will interview Student Experience and Talent (SET) Executive Director finalist Lauren Gumbel, I’ll give an Academic Affairs update to the University Committee, I have my standing meeting with Michelle Johnson and Keri Duce, and my one-on-one with Chancellor Mone.

Wednesday 

Today, I have a Strategic Partnerships meeting, my one-on-ones with Purush Papatla and Simon Bronner, my monthly meeting with Amy Harley, Kay Eilers and I will interview SET Executive Director finalist Mark Richards, I’ll meet with Chancellor Mone and Regents to continue discussions on investment in UWM, and I have a virtual Bridge meeting.

Thursday 

In the morning, I have another CMT Leadership meeting, the APBC meeting, my standing meeting with Brian Thompson, and a check-in with Laura Pedrick. In the afternoon, I have my one-on-one with Dave Clark, Kay Eilers and I will interview SET Executive Director finalist Laurie Marks, I’ll attend Faculty Senate, and I have a meeting with Phyllis King.

Friday 

Today, I have a meeting with Kim Litwack, a partnership meeting with Waukesha County Technical College, and the bimonthly Provost Council meeting. I’ll also meet with direct reports and attend to administrative tasks.

Announcements 

Athletic Training 

March is National Athletic Training Month! The theme this year is “Providing Healthcare Everywhere.” The athletic trainer is a health care professional who renders service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education and training, and the state’s statues, rules, and regulations.

Online Brazil Series Spring 2022 

O Clube Lusófono at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee presents the Online Brazil Series focusing on Brazilian culture and film.

Union Shutdown 

On March 21, a one-day full building closure of the UWM Student Union and Union Parking Garage will be required as part of the continuing renovation project. This shutdown will allow for major electrical work; therefore, all power will be cut from the Student Union and the Union Parking Garage. Standard operations will resume on Tuesday, March 22.

Mellencamp Hall – Temporary Closure 

All offices in Mellencamp Hall, including Financial Aid, the Career Planning and Resource Center, and the Registrar’s Office, will be closed to in-person services from Monday, March 28 through Friday, April 1 due to a planned power outage in the building. While physical offices will be closed, they will continue to provide services remotely and will respond to phone calls, voicemails, and email during regular office hours. A limited number of services may be unavailable or delayed. It is important to note that the Testing Center will not be able to offer any exam scanning services, including exam drop off or pick up, during this time.

State of Working Women 

Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership (WWHEL) invites you to attend a virtual session on the State of Working Women in Wisconsin on Tuesday, March 29 at 11:30 a.m. Kimberly Kane, President and CEO of Kane Communications Group, will share the results of the report she compiled after surveying more than 1,000 women. Dialogue Across Difference

We invite you to the Spring 2022 Dialogue Across Difference: Bridging Understanding about Free Speech and Hate Speech on Tuesday, March 29 at 5 p.m. This dialogue is collaboratively planned and facilitated with UWM students. Student panelists will join Angela Lang for a constructive dialogue about free speech and the impact of hate speech on college campuses. This will be a space where different ideas and perspectives can be shared and heard. We encourage all members of the UWM community to attend either in person or virtually. Registration.

Game Night: The Deep Forest 

The Honors College Equity Team welcomes all UWM students to join in a collaborative, world-building game event focused on monstrosity and decolonization to take place on April 1 and 2. More information.

VOTE! 

Remember to vote in the Wisconsin spring general election on Tuesday, April 5! This election will determine the next Milwaukee mayor as well as several Milwaukee County circuit court judges. UWM will be hosting a polling location in the Union Terrace (located on the ground floor of the Student Union) from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. Make sure you bring a valid photo ID. Learn more about voting.

Joanne Lazirko Award 

Encourage deserving instructors to apply for the Joanne Lazirko Award for Innovative Use of Learning Technologies. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 19. Recipients will receive $1500 and be recognized at the Fall Awards Ceremony.

Art Exhibition 

Off the Press: Exploring Reproducible War Art is a graduate thesis exhibition curated by Emily Hankins. It will run through May 12 in the Emile H. Mathis Art Gallery.

CIE Title VI NRC Grant – Call for Proposals 

The Center for International Education is calling for proposals for the Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) grant for spring and summer 2022. This grant supports faculty initiatives in line with sociocultural programming, pedagogical training, curriculum development, and professional development in US/ED approved less-commonly-taught languages (LCTLs) and area studies. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, but all awarded professional activities must be completed by August 1, 2022. Contact cie-nrc@uwm.edu with questions.
