December 5, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Campus Budget Meeting

Just a reminder that the Campus Budget Meeting is on Tuesday, December 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Union Ballroom. Chancellor Mone, Vice Chancellor Van Harpen, and I will provide updates and answer questions.

Kudos

– The League of American Bicyclists has recognized UW-Milwaukee with a Gold Bicycle Friendly University (BFUSM) award, joining more than 150 visionary colleges and universities from across the country. Well done to all our cyclists!

– NPR’s Senior Vice President of News, Michael Oreskes, wrote an article for the Nieman Foundation at Harvard entitled, “Four Steps to Strengthening Journalism’s Role in Our Democracy.”  He draws lessons from the 2016 Presidential campaign and suggests that there needs to be more focus on “local, more networked, more diverse and fiercely independent journalism.” WUWM is applauded for its record of collaboration.

– Krista Listdahl, Psychology, received an NIH grant to set up a research site for the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, the largest long-term study of brain development in the United States, where 21 universities and centers will follow 10,000 children for 10 years. Congratulations, Krista!

– UWM students Gerald Richie, Kathleen Zeitz, and Sara Karp received scholarships from the Foundry Educational Foundation, totaling $7,000, at the College Industry Conference in Chicago November 17-18. Well done, Gerald, Kathleen, and Sara!
