December 20, 2017  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here is the last weekly update for 2017 from Academic Affairs.

New Senior Student Affairs Officer

Kelly Haag, currently serving as the Director of University Housing at UWM, has been named the new Senior Student Affairs Officer (SSAO) for the Division of Student Affairs, effective January 1, 2018. Congratulations, Kelly, on your new appointment!

Kudos

CEAS PhD student Emad Omrani is the lead author on a recently published a book entitled, “Tribology and Applications of Self-Lubricating Materials,” with Pradeep K. Rohatgi and Pradeep L. Menezes. His second book is expected to be published in January 2018 and he has 14 research publications with over 400 citations. Congratulations to both Emad and his faculty mentors in Materials Science and Engineering!

Art History’s Linda Brazeau and Leigh Malik have been awarded a Preservation Assistance Grant for Smaller Institutions from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This grant will be used to assess preservation and storage strategies for the UWM African Art Collection – one of the largest university-held African Art Collections in the Midwest. An NEH grant such as this recognizes the UWM Art Collection as a significant national humanities collection and unique cultural heritage resource in the region. Wonderful news, Linda and Leigh!

Avik Chakrabarti, Economics, received a $50,000 multidisciplinary grant in collaboration with Professors Anjishnu Banerjee and Melinda Stolley from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). Kudos, Avik!

Annie Melchior, Dance, published an invited article about the Yoga Program in the Dance Department/PSOA in the national periodical for the Iyengar Yoga Association, Yoga Samchar, at the end of November. Given the immense popularity and substantial benefits of these classes for students, this national attention shines a light on the unique offerings of our classes here in the Dance Department/PSOA, at UWM. Congratulations, Annie!
