Town Hall
There will be a virtual Town Hall on Wednesday, July 13 at 9 a.m. Chancellor Mone and I, along with other campus leaders, will discuss enrollment updates and fall planning; our research, partnership, and philanthropy efforts; the value of our colleagues; and budget implications and safety. Kudos
J. Val Klump (Freshwater Sciences) received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Great Lakes Research. The association’s highest accolade recognizes important and continued contributions to Great Lakes research over a period of 20 years or more. Congratulations, Val!
Rebecca Klaper (Freshwater Sciences) and her lab had a study published in the preeminent journal Nature Nanotechnology. The work was conducted as a collaborative work within the Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology, supported by the NSF Centers for Chemical Innovation Program. Well done, Rebecca!
Melinda Kavanaugh (Social Welfare) received national coverage for her research on child caregivers. Her “YCare” training program provides training and support for youth who provide care to a family member with an illness. She has established 12 training programs across the US and will be adapting it to South Africa this summer and fall. Congratulations, Melinda!
Sonia Khatchadourian (English) gave a presentation entitled, “Strategies to Adapt Technical Information for a Non-Technical Audience,” on Friday, June 3 at the inaugural national conference on Writing in the Health Professions. Well done, Sonia!
Lillian Luft (PSOA alum) received a 2022 Windgate-Lamar Fellowship. The Center for Craft’s Windgate-Lamar Fellowship is awarded to the most prestigious and innovative craft artists nationwide. The award is based on their notable artistic merit and demonstrated potential for contributing to the field of craft. Congratulations, Lilly, on this well-deserved honor!
Kudos to Atmospheric Science major Megan Biesmann, who was chosen to participate in this year’s National Center for Atmospheric Research’s Undergraduate Leadership Workshop, and PhD student Dillon Blount, who was chosen to participate in this year’s American Meteorological Society Summer Policy Colloquium.
Siraj Kahn (Education) earned the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English Outstanding Student Teacher Award for the 2021-2022 school year. Congratulations, Siraj!
Milwaukee Athletics
The Milwaukee Athletic Department announced that season ticket memberships and renewals for the 2022-23 Panther basketball seasons are now available. Season memberships for Panther men’s basketball start at $99, while memberships for Panther women’s basketball start at $69.
Former Wisconsin Badger, Marquette Golden Eagle, and Milwaukee Panther basketball stars will reunite to raise money for charity and to prove who is still number one on the court on Friday, July 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the Gruber Law Offices Sportzone at Summerfest.
Milwaukee student athletes continue to score high marks in the classroom and during the Spring 2022 semester posted a collective 3.39 grade-point average, while continuing to emerge from the unpredictable learning environment following the COVID-19 pandemic. This marks the 44th consecutive semester—now spanning more than 20 years—that Milwaukee student athletes have recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better, as well as the 15th straight with a 3.20 or higher. During the Spring 2022 semester, 109 Panthers compiled a GPA of at least 3.8, while 50 of those achieved a perfect 4.0.
The Week in Retrospect
I was away last week and caught up with my direct reports and other team members this week. New student orientations are well underway and new freshman and transfer students are beginning to sign up for classes. Enrollment management is also focusing on our continuing students and reaching out to those who have not begun re-enrolling for the fall semester – student retention is a centerpiece in our efforts to build enrollment. We are also looking at ways for Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to coordinate in a holistic approach to address the needs of struggling students. Planning is underway for the July 13 Town Hall. Academic Affairs will play a prominent role in it, and I will be available to answer questions about academic operations. Finally, the week again brought a blistering heatwave to our campuses and hopefully there will be some more moderate weather in the coming weeks.

CPARC and CCBLLR Relocation
The Career Planning and Resource Center (CPARC) has been relocated to Vogel Hall. During the summer, the doors of Vogel are open Monday – Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Additionally, the Center for Community-based Learning, Leadership, and Research (CCBLLR) staff will also be in Vogel Hall for the summer during the Union renovation. Visitors can access both CPARC and CCBLLR staff and services in Vogel Hall during our regular summer hours. Please direct questions to Laurie Marks (lmarks@uwm.edu).

Life of a Star
We are made of stars: discover how stars fused the chemical elements in our bodies on Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m. at the UWM Planetarium. In this live, interactive show, marvel at the dramatic changes of stars as they transform stellar nurseries to exotic objects such as white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes.
Summer Stars
Find popular summer constellations in the night sky and learn the stories behind them, such as the Big Bear, Hercules, and the Summer Triangle. Join us on Saturdays in July at 2 p.m. in the UWM Planetarium.
Full Moon Canoe
Paddle down the Milwaukee River with UWM Planetarium Director Jean Creighton on Wednesday, July 13 from 7-9 p.m. While enjoying the full moon above, you’ll learn about our nearest celestial, other exotic moons in the solar system, and more intriguing objects scattered through space from an expert astronomer. We’ll meet at the Milwaukee Rowing Club Boathouse (1990 N. Commerce St.). Registration and non-refundable payment required by 5 p.m. July 12.
