Requirements for Admission for Academic Study

Only Undergraduate Students may be admitted to a degree program through achieving B2 level placement in all core classes, Graduate Students* must provide a TOEFL or IELTS score for admission.

*Please note there is an exception for graduate students who have been conditionally admitted, please see our conditional admissions page to learn more information.


UWM IEP Admission Criteria

Full-time students in the UWM Intensive English Program can be admitted for regular admission with required foundation coursework at the undergraduate level. A student must meet the following criteria for undergraduate admission:

Regular Admission with Required Foundation Coursework

3 semester program: 

  1. Be a full-time student in the UWM Intensive English Program (IEP)
  2. Achieve CEFR B2 level in all core IEP classes (Reading, Listening & Speaking, and Writing) by completing at least one semester of B1 classes and achieving all the B1 outcomes

2 semester program: 

  1. Be a full-time student in the UWM Intensive English Program (IEP)
  2. Achieve CEFR C1 level in two out of the three core IEP classes by completing at least one semester of B2 classes and achieving all the B2 outcomes.

The C1 level is the highest level in the UWM IEP curriculum. The IEP uses the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Achieving B2 level placement in all core classes does not mean that you have been admitted to UW-Milwaukee as an undergraduate student.

B2 level placement will satisfy the English Proficiency Requirement for Undergraduate Admission.

In addition to all application steps, you must provide new proof of funding before you will receive an academic I-20. Please see CIE’s website for proof of funding requirements.
