International Student Orientation

The U.S. Government requires that students who have a visa for the purpose of studying in the U.S. attend a new student orientation that includes important information about maintaining your visa status. Make sure that you do not miss attending an orientation before the semester begins.

New Freshmen

Thursday, January 16, 2020
8:30 AM in Cunningham G40

All international students who have an F-1 visa must attend International Student Orientation. The orientation will take most of the day (8:30-4:00) and a free lunch will be provided. Register for orientation here.

Students who do not attend will be not be able to enroll in courses.

Orientation covers such topics such as:

  • Visa requirements
  • Culture shock
  • Student rights and safety
  • Health Insurance
  • Classroom norms and expectations
  • Academic regulations and plagiarism
  • Campus services

Students with Conditional Admission must attend orientation in the UWM Intensive English Program. Students will attend an orientation at the Center for International Education when their status changes to dual admission or regular admission.

Also, graduate assistants must have a Social Security number. If you need to apply for a social security card, let CIE know to receive some information.
