Chancellor’s Graduate Student Support Award
The Chancellor’s Graduate Student Award (CGSA) program is designed to give UWM a competitive edge in attracting and retaining high-quality, talented graduate students. There is no application for the award. Each program in English grants these awards to incoming students as part of the normal admissions process. These are one-year non-renewable awards and are typically several thousand dollars. They can be awarded in addition to a Teaching Assistantship.
Advanced Opportunity (AOP) Fellowship
(Incoming and continuing students may apply)
The Advanced Opportunity Program (AOP) is funded by the State of Wisconsin. AOP Fellowships are designed to assist members of groups under-represented in graduate study, and other disadvantaged students, to enter and complete a graduate degree at UWM. Please note: the AOP application requires a separate letter of recommendation that addresses your application and qualification for this funding. The AOP is renewable and provides tuition remission, health insurance, and a stipend.
Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship (DGSF) (Incoming and continuing students may apply)
The DGSF is a one-year non-renewable fellowship that includes tuition remission, health insurance, and academic year stipend and travel support. The award is not open to doctoral students who will achieve dissertator status. These awards are typically granted to students already enrolled after their first year.
Non-Resident Tuition Remission (NRTR)
(Incoming and continuing students may apply)
The NRTR waiver grants out-of-state students the ability to pay in-state tuition rates. To find out more about this program, its restrictions, and how to apply, contact the English Department’s Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. Typically, applications for an NRTR are made only after an offer of admission.
Fellowships and Awards for Continuing Students
Graduate Student Travel Award
The Graduate School Travel Support program offers partial funding to UWM master’s and doctoral students for presenting scholarly and creative works at conferences, performances, or exhibitions. Students are encouraged to apply for funds before the event, and funding is provided as reimbursement of expenses after the travel has been completed. There is a cumulative limit of approximately $1,000 per student for each program in which the student is enrolled.
Distinguished Dissertation Fellowship (DDF)
The DDF is a one-year non-renewable fellowship that includes tuition remission, health insurance, an academic year stipend and travel support. The award is for PhD students who have achieved dissertator status.
Department of English Awards
English makes a number of awards to students already enrolled in the program. These include the Tinsley Helton Dissertation Fellowship, the Frederick J. Hoffman Award for Best Graduate Student Essay, awards for teaching excellence, and a number of creative writing awards. For more information about these awards, contact the Director of Graduate Studies in the English Department.
