How Deaf Children in Nicaragua Created a New Language
Have you heard of Nicaraguan Sign Language? When the Sandinista National Liberation Front came into power, they attempted to broaden literacy for all Nicaraguans, leading to the opening of a school for deaf children. However, this school taught “oralism”, meaning that the deaf children would have to lip read and verbalize their responses rather than using physical signals.
