Dance BA

Expressing yourself through movement comes naturally to you. Teach and inspire others to find that joy within themselves with our BA in Dance. Develop your skills alongside experienced professionals and connect with a vibrant community of artists to make your dream a reality.

Our program prepares you to teach participatory movement traditions in community settings, including schools, community centers and health clubs. You’ll also be prepared to lead community groups in creating and performing their own dance and movement rituals. Through community service-learning fieldwork and participation in community dance movements, you’ll develop as a leader and as an expressive dancer. Our students are also well prepared to work professionally with dance studios and companies in education or outreach roles, as well as perform.

Program Details

Our innovative curriculum integrates multiple disciplines and somatic practices, creating a learning environment that prioritizes a balance of body and mind knowledge with informed, creative expression. You’ll take courses in dance history, choreography, improvisation and performance, as well as a range of electives in areas such as music, theater and film.

We also emphasize the development of critical thinking and communication skills, as well as opportunities for community engagement and professional development. Many of our BA students pursue dance as a second major, which gives you an opportunity to tailor your education to your interests and goals. No matter what you choose to do, you’ll be prepared for a wide range of careers, as well as graduate study in dance or related fields.

Special workshops and residencies are also scheduled throughout the academic year to provide opportunities for you to train with well-known guest artists and choreographers. Included in these residencies are performances and technique and repertory classes. Recent guest artists have included D. Sabela Grimes, Melanie George, Kia Smith, Parijat Desai, Alfonso Cervera, Aysha Upchurch and Joe Goode.

The Peck School of the Arts offers three Living Learning Communities where you can be a part of a “community within a community.” You’ll make friends, form study groups and do social activities together. And, best of all, there is no additional cost to be a part of a Living Learning Community.

Performances

Four concerts are presented at UWM each year: “Winterdances” and “Springdances,” which showcase students performing in world premieres by faculty and guest artists, and “New Dancemakers” and “UpStart,” which feature choreography by undergraduate and graduate students.
