Research begins with curiosity. At the Peck School of the Arts, faculty and students investigate questions through creative practice. Their work generates new knowledge, sparks dialogue and expands the ways we understand ourselves and the world around us.

As part of an R1 research university, the Peck School of the Arts embraces research as creative practice, an approach that recognizes artistry as a rigorous form of inquiry.

Undergraduate Research

Musicians perform on percussion instruments in a concert hall, with a marimba in the foreground and stained-glass windows behind.

As an undergraduate, you’ll work alongside faculty mentors to explore ideas through studio practice, performances, exhibitions, films, design projects and community-engaged work.

You can get paid to conduct research. The Support for Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) program, offered in partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Research, connects you with opportunities to participate on faculty research projects. These experiences encourage experimentation, build professional skills, and prepare you to contribute meaningfully to your artistic field.

Graduate study provides the time, mentorship and resources to pursue creative inquiry in greater depth. Here, you’ll develop original research through sustained artistic practice, scholarship and interdisciplinary collaboration alongside accomplished faculty.

Research culminates in thesis exhibitions, performances, films, publications, compositions, design projects and more. Along the way, you’ll present work at exhibitions, festivals, conferences, and other professional venues.
