Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s announcement from Academic Affairs (we are more than halfway into the semester).

Kudos

– PSOA Art & Design Department received the James A. Schwalbach Award at the 2016 Wisconsin Art Education Association Conference for outstanding contributions to art education, the WAEA, and the Visioneer Design Challenge over the past 10 years. Congratulations, Art & Design!

– Ray Fleming (Psychology), Leah Stoiber (Psychology), Heidi Pfeiffer (Psychology), Sarah Kienzler (Psychology), Laura Pedrick (Academic Affairs), Dylan Barth (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning), and Diane Reddy (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and Psychology), whose article, “Using U-Pace instruction to improve the academic performance of economically disadvantaged undergraduates,” published in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, was honored in September with the 2016 Research and Scholarship Award, National University Technology Network. Well done!

– Aneesh Aneesh, Sociology and Global Studies, was interviewed on the radio and covered in the newspaper in Santa Fe regarding his public lecture on global citizenship. Congratulations, Aneesh!

In the News

– Bob Beck, Political Science (he is not only heading our IT on campus!), discussed the potential impacts of the US Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) last week on the Institute of World Affairs’ International Focus.

– Bonnie North’s interview with Bettina Arnold, Josh Driscoll, and Chad Sheridan for WUWM’s Lake Effect has been posted to NPR’s Facebook page. NPR also tweeted the story, a first for a WUWM piece.

The Week

Monday

This morning we further our discussions regarding the INTO/UWM partnership. I have my weekly meeting with VC Robin Van Harpen, the Chancellor’s Cabinet meets, I have meetings with several direct reports, and close the day with a Campus Budget Planning meeting.

Tuesday

I have my standing meeting with Mark Harris, a meeting with the Chancellor to discuss how institutes of higher learning might serve as portals for regional talent, the CEMAT co-sponsors will meet, and I have my monthly meeting with Scott Emmons. In the afternoon, I meet with the University Committee, I also have my weekly staff meeting, and the INTO/UWM wrap-up.

Wednesday

I start the day with my weekly meeting with the Chancellor, and meetings with direct reports. Later, I provide opening remarks for the Asian Faculty and Staff Reception, meet with the associate deans, and have my weekly meeting with Trudy Turner. I end the day at the SOIS 50thAnniversary Reception.

Thursday

I have my monthly meetings with Bob Greenstreet, Rebecca Freer, and John Reisel. I also have a meeting with Mark Harris, Paula Rhyner, and Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska and a meeting with the College of Health Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board.

Friday

I have my monthly meeting with Brian Thompson, a teleconference with the Provost from UW-Whitewater, and meetings with direct reports. In the afternoon, I have my monthly meeting with Ron Perez, an SPC Target meeting, and I’ll end the day at the Milwaukee Press Club’s 2016 Media Hall of Fame Dinner.

Exploring Majors in one centralized location

The UWM Exploring Majors Fair will take place on today from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. This event provides students with the opportunity to speak with faculty and advisors about all UWM majors, minors, and certificates, in one centralized location.

– This week, the UWM Libraries are celebrating International Open Access Week.

– Author Simon Winchester will give a talk on his recent book, “Pacific: Silicon Chips and Surfboards, Coral Reefs and Atom Bombs, Brutal Dictators and Fading Empires,” on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the AGS Library.

– Justin Schumaker presents, “New Models of Game Publishing: Early Access, Steam Greenlight, Episodic Games and Narrative,” on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the DH Lab.

From the School of Public Health

The Zilber School’s On Public Health Series presents, “Public Health, Water, and You: Come Talk to your Water Leaders in Milwaukee,” on Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Zilber School Triplex. Free and open to the public.

UWM Brand Day – 2016

The UWM Brand Oversight Committee is presenting the annual Brand Day on Thursday in the Alumni Fireside Lounge. Any member of the UWM community who prepares or supervises the preparation of UWM marketing or promotional materials is encouraged to attend one or all of the sessions. No registration is required.

Urban Studies Fall Lecture: “Why Building New Sports Stadiums Makes The Rich Richer, And The Poor Poorer” by Sean Dinces, Assistant Professor of History and Political Science at Long Beach City College and the former holder of the Alan H. Selig Chair in Sport and Society at UW-Madison. The lecture is on Friday, October 28, 2-3 p.m., Greene Hall, UWM. More information is available.

WGS Fall 2016 Brown Bag Series presents, “Dispossession by Administration,” given by Associate Professor Jodi Melamed of Marquette University on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library.

From the Center for 21st Century Studies
Controversial Northwestern University Professor Jacqueline Stevens (Political Science) will be on campus this Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Curtin 175 to talk about, “Saying No to Military Power in a University.”

From the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research

The UWM Campus-wide Food Drive will be take place from October 24 – December 4. UWM is collecting non-perishable food donations for the Hunger Task Force, a free and local food bank located here in Milwaukee. There are over 50 collection boxes located around campus, including at the CCBLLR, located in the Union, Room G28. You can also make monetary donations.
