UW System Strategic Planning Listening Sessions

On Wednesday, October 28, we are all invited to provide input for UW System strategic planning at the following times and locations:

  • 10-11:30 a.m. General listening session, UWM Student Union Ballroom
  • 5-6:30 p.m. General listening session, UWM Student Union Ballroom

If you wish to participate in the morning listening session, in which UWM will gather input, please RSVP here. If you wish to participate in the evening listening session, in which UW System will gather input and community members will participate, please RSVP here. Kudos

– Katie Paugh, History, was awarded the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians’ Article Prize for the best article on women, gender, and/or sexuality published by a woman resident in North America for, “Yaws, Syphilis, Sexuality, and the Circulation of Medical Knowledge in the British Caribbean and the Atlantic World,” published in the Bulletin of the History of Medicine in 2014. Well done Katie!

– UWM Distinguished Professor Arun Garg and Associate Professor Jay Kapellusch, both in Occupational Science and Technology, have been awarded funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the amount of $890,068. Their three-year research project titled, “Exposure-Response Relationships for Low Back Pain from Pooled Data,” involves collaborations with the Ohio State University, the University of Utah, American University, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Congratulations to both of you.

– Carolyn Eichner, Women’s and Gender Studies and History, was elected to the board of the International Federation for Research in Women’s History (IFRWH) as the representative for the United States. Congrats, Carolyn!

– Bart Adrian, Atmospheric Science and Mathematics and former WITI-TV meteorologist, was honored by the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on October 4 by being inducted into the Academy’s prestigious Silver Circle. The Television Academy established the Silver Circle to honor outstanding individuals who have devoted 25 years or more to the television industry, and who have made significant contributions to their local television market. Congratulations, Bart!

– Professors in Practice and alumni Brian Johnsen and Sebastian Schmaling’s Topo House received a 2015 American Architectural Award. This program, organized by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and The European Centre for Architecture and Art, is considered one of North America’s most distinguished building awards competitions for new and cutting-edge design in the United States. This year, the Museum received a record number of entries. Winning projects will be exhibited this winter in Chicago and Athens. Well done, Brian and Sebastian!

New Faculty

As I mentioned in an earlier update, a number of new faculty have joined UWM. This week we highlight the College of Letters and Science and welcome them to campus:

The Week

Monday
I begin the day with my weekly meeting with VC Van Harpen, followed by monthly and bi-weekly meetings with Interim Dean Paula Rhyner, ASC Chair Robin Weigert, and VC Tom Luljak. The Chancellor’s Cabinet meets and I’ll be attending a video conference of the full CSRG (Common System Review Group) to discuss updates on the budget process. Later, I’ll be traveling to the Medical College of Wisconsin to attend the CTSI Board of Directors meeting.

Tuesday
In the morning, I’ll be attending an American Indian Advisory Committee meeting. The afternoon will include a luncheon with Marquette University’s new Provost, Daniel Myers, and my weekly staff meeting.

Wednesday
The morning begins with a meeting with the Education Advisory Board (EAB) to discuss data analytics benchmarking, and meetings with direct reports. In the afternoon, I have a CEMAT co-chair meeting with the Chancellor, my weekly meeting with the Chancellor, and Gesele Durham and I will meet with the Lubar School of Business to discuss enrollment and retention. In the evening, I’ll be attending the UWM Student Startup Challenge.

Thursday
The morning is filled with meetings with Interim Dean Ron Perez, UWM Research Foundation President Brian Thompson, UC Chair John Reisel, and Honors College Director Peter Sands. I’ll be attending a UW System Provost’s meeting, via video conference, in the afternoon. In the evening, I will attend the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare’s 50th Anniversary event.

Friday
Gesele Durham and I continue our meetings with Schools/Colleges on enrollments and retention. Friday we have the School of Information Studies and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning on the agenda. I’ll be traveling to South Africa in the afternoon to attend the Faculty of Arts 6th Annual Conference at the University of Zululand, where I am a keynote speaker. I return Monday and the cost will be covered by the University of Zululand.

Announcements

From the Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning
– The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is pleased to announce the 2016 UWM Teaching and Learning Symposium to be held on January 13. Please consider submitting a proposal by October 30 to present, demonstrate, or discuss any topic that concerns teaching and student learning.

Wisconsin Science Festival
– UWM is hosting the Wisconsin Science Festival October 23-24. Now in its fifth year, the statewide festival is produced by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, UW-Madison, and the Morgridge Institute for Research. UWM is a featured partner in Milwaukee, offering six entertaining and interactive public shows targeted at older students and adults.

From Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latin@ Studies (LACUSL)
– The Chican@/Latin@ Encuentro/Encontro, inviting students, faculty, and staff to celebrate as a community of scholars, will take place on Monday, October 12 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge. Artivist Olmeca will share a workshop and performance.

From Global Inclusion & Engagement
– Nominations are being accepted for the UW System Board of Regents Diversity Awards in three categories: Individual, Team, and Institution/Unit. Up to $5,000 will be awarded to up to three winners (one in each category system-wide). Information and submission guidelines. Completed nomination materials should be emailed to award-submission@uwm.edu by October 30.

Ombuds Council
– The Ombuds Council is available as a resource to all UWM employees. The council provides assistance in exploring options to resolve problems, complaints, and conflicts at a preliminary and informal level. Individuals or departments/units may request assistance via a confidential website: https://uwm.edu/ombuds/contact/.

From the UWM Libraries
– The Digital Humanities Lab hosts a live “taping” of a Technophiles Podcast with guest Thomas Malaby, UWM Department of Anthropology, discussing, “Games and Society,” on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m.

From the Office of Research
– On Friday, October 23, UWM’s Second Annual Summer Opportunities in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine) Fair will be held in the Kenwood IRC building from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. The fair will provide an opportunity for undergraduate STEMM students to learn about summer opportunities for learning outside the classroom, and to learn about career pathways in some interdisciplinary fields. Numerous booths will provide information on research and internship opportunities both within the University and with our community and business partners. Three panel discussions on water, health, and energy-related career pathways will address how students can prepare to work in these areas. Both the information booths and panel discussions will provide students an opportunity to talk with faculty, staff, and community partners about STEMM opportunities.
