Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

WUWM had a big night at the Milwaukee Press Club’s Annual Gridiron Awards dinner last week, taking home six Gold, five Silver, and four Bronze awards for their work in 2022. WUWM also won a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for their Bubbler Talk & Voter Guide series. This entry now goes on to compete in the prestigious, national Edward R. Murrow Awards to be announced in the fall. See a full listing of the awards WUWM has won this year, including links to each story. Congratulations to the entire WUWM team for an excellent year covering the important new stories in our community!

In the News

Students from DocUWM (Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres) were interviewed by TMJ4 about their experience interviewing historians, business owners, and longtime residents for their forthcoming documentary about the Brady Street neighborhood. The film, which is a project in partnership with the Brady Street Business Improvement District, is expected to debut in 2024.

Milwaukee Athletics

The Milwaukee women’s basketball team has set the date for the 23rd Annual Golf Classic on Friday, August 11 at Songbird Hills Golf Club in Hartland, Wisconsin. All participants will receive an exclusive Panther item, can meet current Panther players and coaches, and participate in silent and live auctions with proceeds going to the women’s basketball program.

The Week in Retrospect

I gave updates to the Academic Staff Committee Monday morning and then attended an Extended Cabinet meeting that had a presentation about the May 25, Fall Enrollment Kickoff event. I ended the day with a celebration of our many outstanding students graduating with honors. On Tuesday, I met with the Associate Deans and provided updates. On Wednesday, I started the day with the Deans’ meeting and then participated in an event to acknowledge and celebrate the effort that went into the Higher Learning Commission accreditation process, and to thank Vice Provost Dev Venugopalan for his many years of outstanding service to UWM. I gave updates at the APBC meeting and attended the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute quarterly meeting on Thursday. I am looking forward to a weekend of wonderful events including the Dissertation Completion Support Program (DisCo) end-of-year celebration on Saturday and the Black & Gold Graduations on Sunday. That will be a joyous day in the Panther Arena!
