Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.
Dean of the College of General Studies
Dr. Simon Bronner has accepted the position of Dean of the College of General Studies, effective July 1. He is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus of American Studies and Folklore at Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg, where he served as department chair and director of the School of Humanities. Most recently, he held the Maxwell C. Weiner Distinguished Professorship of Humanities at Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is the author or editor of more than 40 books on folklore and folklife, cultural history, and ethnology, including most recently the Oxford Handbook of American Folklore and Folklife for Oxford University Press and The Practice of Folklore: Essays Toward a Theory of Tradition for the University Press of Mississippi. Among Simon’s awards are the Lifetime Scholarly Achievement Award and Kenneth Goldstein Memorial Award for Academic Leadership from the American Folklore Society, the Mary Turpie Prize for program development from the American Studies Association, and the doctoral education award from the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools. I am looking forward to working with Simon on my leadership team!
Director of the Office of Central Advising
I am pleased to announce that Brian Hinshaw will be the new Director of the Office of Central Advising, effective July 1. Brian has worked for UWM since 2002 as an instructor in English Composition, a Senior Academic Advisor in the Lubar School of Business, and most recently as an Associate Registrar in the Division of Enrollment Management. He has served on the Academic Staff Committee, co-chaired the Enhancing Advising Committee, and helped found the Mission Possible initiative as a part of Panther Academic Welcome. He holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Writing from Emerson College and a BA in English from UWM. Congratulations, Brian, as you step into this new role!

Colleen Janczewski (Social Work) will present, “Using Big Data to Answer Big Questions,” at the World Affairs Seminar on June 26. The World Affairs Seminar is a week-long opportunity for international high school students at Carroll University in Waukesha. Congratulations, Colleen!
Helen Bader School of Social Welfare’s Office of Applied Gerontology presented the forum, “Older Adults & Hoarding: Where Do We Go from Here?” at Bader Philanthropies on June 13. Panelists included professionals from Legal Action of Wisconsin, Catholic Charities of Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee Department of Aging. Well done!
Mo Zell (Architecture) and Ali Kopyt (SARUP alumna) founded Women in Design (WID) Milwaukee five years ago. Today, their thriving 500-member organization is about to receive nonprofit status and is a newly-announced American Institute of Architects (AIA) Diversity Recognition Program honoree. WID Milwaukee focuses on connecting, empowering, and advocating for women’s opportunities, leadership, and success. Congratulations, Mo and Ali!
Congratulations to all of the participants in the Spring Walk & Roll Challenge! Together, participants walked a total of 61,779,840 steps and cycled 8,132.5 miles.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alumni Club awarded its highest honor, The MIT Great Dome Award, to the Wisconsin Chapter for 2019. The award recognizes especially the work of Russell Cuhel (UWM Freshwater Sciences), Board Chair of Volunteerism and Parties, for reinstating the annual Experimental Aircraft Association International Alumni Meeting that draws students and engineers from around the world. Well done, Russell!

Milwaukee Athletics
Milwaukee Athletics was recognized on June 12 in Orlando during the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators’ (NACMA) Best of Awards at the organization’s 28th annual convention. The Panthers marketing team was awarded the silver medal in the Multi-Platform Brand Campaign category for its 2018-2019 “United We Roar” brand campaign.
Milwaukee student athletes continue to score high marks in the classroom and posted a collective 3.23 grade-point average during the Spring 2019 semester. That followed-up on the Fall 2018 term where Panther student athletes notched a 3.24 GPA. This marks the 38th consecutive semester that Milwaukee student athletes have recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better, as well as the ninth straight with a 3.20 or higher!
More information is now available for fans that are interested in joining the Milwaukee men’s basketball team at the third annual “The Islands of the Bahamas Showcase” in November. Details have been announced by the event’s organizer, bdG Sports. Fans, parents, and alumni can book rooms at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar with preferred tournament pricing by clicking the links under fan information. Links are also available to purchase tournament tickets and bus passes.

Monday
In the morning, I have my weekly meeting with Robin Van Harpen, my standing meeting with Joan Prince, and the Chancellor’s Expanded Executive Cabinet meeting. In the afternoon, I have an Integrated Support Services Executive Sponsors meeting, my weekly staff meeting, and I’ll attend the Connected Systems Institute Keynote address by Microsoft President and General Counsel Brad Smith.
Tuesday
I start the day with a Connected Systems Institute Core Team meeting, and an interview with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer candidate Warren Scherer.
Wednesday
In the morning, I have an IT Advisory Council meeting and a Budget Model Support Team Deep Dive meeting. In the afternoon, I have a lunch meeting with Rockwell Vice President for Connected Enterprise Consulting Lyman Tschanz and a video shoot for CIE recruitment.
Thursday
I start the day with a Milwaukee Regional Economic Development meeting, following by my bi-weekly meeting with Katie Miota. I also have meetings with my direct reports.
Friday
In the morning, we have a site visit with UW System Math Initiative representatives. In the afternoon, I have a Data Needs follow-up meeting. And in the evening, I’ll attend a farewell/welcome gathering for Dean Kanti Prasad and incoming Dean Kaushal Chari.
