We understand that navigating higher education can come with unique challenges for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients and mixed-status families. We want to remind you that there are a variety of resources available to you at UWM:
DACA and Legal Services Referrals to community resources
DACA recipients and mixed-status students needing assistance with DACA-related documentation, renewals or legal advice have options.
- Visit the UWM’s First Gen+ Resource Center, Student Union, Room EG39, or call 414-229-7234.
- Visit this DACA Resources webpage of Voces de la Frontera.
Financial Aid, Scholarships and Emergency Funds
Students in mixed-status families may be eligible for scholarships and other funding opportunities, including resources for those who may not qualify for federal financial aid. Be sure to explore all available options. We encourage you to speak with a UWM financial aid counselor who can help you identify all available opportunities.
Student Support Service
UWM provides a supportive community through various centers, which offer services and programs designed to support students from diverse backgrounds. These centers provide academic support, mentorship and help navigating campus life.
Mental Health and Wellness
UWM offers counseling services to help you manage stress, anxiety and any other challenges you might face.
Workshops and Advocacy
Throughout the year, we offer workshops and events aimed at educating and empowering DACA recipients and mixed-status families. These events cover important topics such as immigration policy, resources, mental health, how to become an ally and community-building.
Contact Campus Police for Safety Guidance
If you’re unsure about safety protocols or need assistance, reach out to our campus police department. They can provide information on emergency procedures, escort services and resources for self-defense training. Keep the campus police phone number saved in your phone and familiarize yourself with the locations of emergency call boxes around campus.
