African-descended communities of Spanish America

A legacy of slavery and regional migration created significant African-descended communities throughout Spanish America. However, outside of regions where plantation agriculture flourished, many of these communities have been rendered relatively invisible in nations which have imagined themselves as shaped primarily by their indigenous, mestizo or European roots. This Institute explores an important dimension of the racial and cultural diversity of Spanish America by examining the histories, experiences and struggles for recognition of African-descended communities, particularly in the past two centuries.

Cost: 

$90 in-service teachers /$30 Education students
(includes breakfasts, lunches, and materials).  Dorm housing is available for $100/night.

Modest travel funding available for educators attending from a distance.

The workshop is a collaboration between the UW-Milwaukee Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), UW-Madison Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies (LACIS), and Florida International University  Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC).  CLACS, LACIS and LACC are Title VI National Resource Centers, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
