International students who are starting at UWM this spring are eligible to enter the U.S. beginning December 27.

UWM is observing a holiday break from December 22, 2025 through January 2, 2026. Most physical on-campus offices will be closed to in-person visitors during this time. The Center for International Education Main Office (Garland 138) will be closed to in-person visitors but our staff is working virtually and can be reached by calling +1 414-229-4846 or emailing isss@uwm.edu during regular business hours.

Important considerations

  • Arrange your housing in advance:
    • Students living on campus: Pay attention to your move-in date as stated in your housing contract. If you arrive earlier, be sure to make arrangements for temporary housing.
    • Students living off-campus: Use off-campus housing resources to make your housing arrangements. Do not wait until you arrive in Milwaukee to arrange your housing; most landlords will also be celebrating holidays and not be available.
  • Prepare for Milwaukee weather: January is one of Milwaukee’s coldest months; snow and ice are common. Come prepared with a warm winter coat, hat, mittens/gloves, scarf and appropriate footwear.
  • Complete arrival-check in: After you arrive in the U.S., you must complete arrival check-in, available in your ISSS Connect portal 30 days prior to the start date on your I-20.
  • Buy groceries and other essentials: View a list of nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, and places to shop for home furnishings, winter clothing, and more. Food service on campus will be limited prior to the start of classes.
  • Post-arrival campus resources:
    • Food PantryUWM’s food pantry offers free food for those who are facing financial difficulties.
    • Student Health & Wellness CenterIf you have a health-related concern or need to talk to a mental health professional, please call 414-229-7429 to schedule an appointment.
    • Emergency Services: If you have a medical or mental health emergency, call 911 or UWM Police 414-229-9911, for immediate assistance.
