Former Ph.D. Student Wins International Research Fellowship

Dr. Amberleigh Henschen, former BioSci PhD graduate, received the Kessel Research Fellowship from the American Ornithological Society. The Kessel Research Fellowship is awarded to only two applicants world wide. Dr. Henschen studied under Peter Dunn and Linda Whittingham while at UWM.

While at UWM, Dr. Henschen studied avian malaria. She now works with Dr. Rob Fleischer as a post-doc at the National Zoo (Smithsonian Institution). With the Kessel Fellowship, she will study the basis of disease tolerance in house finches, which are often infected by a bacterium that causes conjunctivitis.
