This month’s L&S In Focus Newsletter featured some notable people from the Department of Biological Sciences!

The newsletter notes that Dr. Filipe Alberto is the recipient of one of the largest grants at UWM ($2.8 million over 3 years) for his research on the genetics of  breeding giant kelp to be farmed for bioenergy. Read more about Dr. Alberto’s research on pages 10-11 of In Focus.

Bio Sci undergraduate, Shannon Dugan, was mentioned in page 15 for her outstanding volunteer work, which was also featured in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Shannon has volunteered in soup kitchens, visited with dementia patients, and has worked with a doctor in Guatemala to triage patients in a health care clinic.
