Motivating Donors for Marginalized Causes: How Do Fundraisers Do That?
- Ruth Hansen, Assistant Professor, Management, UW-Whitewater
It’s no secret that the charities that serve some of the most vulnerable members of society are often themselves financially vulnerable. Government funding is a staple for human services organizations, but charitable gifts are another important source of revenue. How is fundraising different for organizations serving marginalized populations?
This workshop draws on a mixed methods study of fundraising practice to break down the objectives of fundraising acquisition appeals and examine how fundraisers work with issues of social acceptability when writing for client groups. It addresses the thought processes behind those choices, and the importance of being intentional in fundraising communications.
